Have any of you used a camera flash bracket, but quit using it? Do any of you still use one? Anybody keeping one in their bone yard? For those with experience, how would you form a recommendation for or against using one?

Going through some extra gear today, I picked up a flash bracket I bought 2 years ago, but never used. It's this model from Custom Brackets:

Trying several ways to hold it, I thought, this feels so awkward, I'd rather use another alternative whether I got better or worse results. Possibly paying over $50 for it and not knowing whether a one-time use resides in the future, I haven't got rid of it yet. But I question why have I kept this if I haven't used it once time in two years.

I've gone through 3 over the years. I might still pull one out for event work as even bounce flash can sometimes put shadows where you don't want them, but for the most part they're part of my photography artifacts museum. The camera flip type make more sense than the one where the flash changes orientation. But improved iso performance allows me to be more subtle with supplemental flash so I haven't used mine much in years.

In past decades when I shot weddings on medium format film, I advocated the use of the Newton Camera Bracket http://www.newtoncamerabrackets.com/ (external link)
Over the years, many pro shooters who did weddings/events followed my recommendation and became vocal supporters.

The Newton comes in a variety of models, generally falling into the camera rotator vs. the flash rotator, but both kept the flash centered over the lens axis to eliminate side shadow, and did so without the silly need to rotate and change flashhead angles every time you flipped between Landscape and Portrait mode. They are very light in weight yet also very sturdy, and they are user adaptable easily to fit a variety of camera types...the same bracket that I used for Bronica ETRSi medium format SLR is still usable with current Canon dSLR -- and it does not matter if you have the huge body 1D series or the diminuitive Tn series body! Admittedly tripod use was a bit easier with the camera flip model, but with an L bracket that is less a factor.

When you need info, Robert Newton is an excellent consultant about model choice for your particular equipment, including suggestions about choices of optional bits to improve upon the ergonomics, etc.
