I have a 17-40 and I'm not impressed with the sharpness. What other lens in that range would be sharp. What about the Rokinon 24mm 1.4? Canons 16-35 f4?
I appreciate any information.
David

Are you shooting full frame or cropped?

17-40 gives awful corners. I have now 16-35 2.8 II and it is much better lens.
I like it to be 2.8, I have it on film and older digital cameras.

I shoot full frame most of the time and also a crop. I've been thinking the 16-35 as it would work on both. I have noticed the softness in the corners too on the 17-40.

I owned the 16-35L II for many years and at one point it was a great lens but by today's standards it is a relic that I can no longer recommend. the 16-35L II is not sharp wide open plus it is soft in the corners.

16-35L F4 IS is a MUCH better lens and of course the 16-35L III is the best lens in this range on the planet.

I love my 16-35 f/4 IS. Best in class unless you need f/2.8

Another vote for the Canon 16-35 f/4 L IS. Is allows me to capture interiors of dark Basilica’s at 1/10 Hand Held with razor sharp results. Corner sharpness is confirmed stepping up from my 17-40 L, which I still have.
A great lens for a very, very fair price.

16-35 F4. Fabulous lens, and a no-brainer in it's FL range unless you absolutely need F2.8.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Yet another vote for the Canon EF 16-35 f4 L IS.What a great lens to have in your camera bag, One of the reasons I bought it in the first place was looking at some of the awesome photos on this website just like the Canon EF 100-400L mark 2. :-)
