Copyright ?

I have a company that wants me to send email of one of my photos to print in a large size. My fear is the photo is of our skyline and he is talking about wanting to reuse the photo. This means he is basically taking rights to use photo as much as he would like. I don’t know how much to charge for the rights to use the photo however he would like as much as he would like. Any advise would be very much appreciated.

For me, one of the determining factors when selling a license to use an image (note that you are NOT selling the copyright) is the use to which the image will be put. For instance, if the licensee proposes to simply use the image as part of their corporate branding or advertising, that's one thing. However, if they plan to resell the image on a million tee shirts or coffee mugs, that's a whole different ball game and you would probably want to 'share' in the profits somehow, usually by charging a higher license fee or by constructing the fee based on the number of 'copies' that are sold.

Depends on usage and how unique the photo is. Ask too much and they'll hire someone else to provide them the same thing ... if that's possible.

I would ask specifically how he plans to use the image and draft a license which states so. He will need to sign the document and pay before you send the file.

A client purchasing a photo to use as a large print decorating the interior of their office is quite different from a client who has specific 're-use' in mind, particularly if such re-use is

1. for the purposes of promoting their company or products, or
   
2. to be further resold to others who are promoting their own business/products!
   

• it is not 'copyright', as YOU ALWAYS retain copyright (you were never their employee so never shot the photo 'for them as the employee').
  
• You should be granting only license TO USE FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES (and quanitites).

Those are the possible combinations licensing can yield.

Note that in all of those cases the photographer retains the copyright (and the moral rights), but some situations can make it so that not even the photographer himself can use the image for as long as the client retains the rights (exclusive licences). Makes it plain why you should never give exclusive rights in perpetuity or for an 'unlimited' time.

There is also the option to sell the copyright. I've done this in the past. After receiving payment, I delete the image and related files (raw, tiffs, &c.) off my drive and forget about it.

Basically, you have to ask yourself how much the image is worth to YOU, then proceed from there in terms of pricing, rights, and negotiation.
