Disclaimer:

This thread is (hopefuly) about the difference between filter brands, not about whether or not you should use a filter. I am VERY aware and respect the fact that there are many folks who prefer not to slap a piece of glass in front of their awesome lenses. I get it. Ok. Respectfully, this thread does not apply to you.

I'm looking for a decent, clear protective filter. UV is not a major requirement for me, so if it is a UV filter or not is no deal breaker for me. My objective is to simply protect the front element of my lens so I won't have to worry about using a lens cap or lens hood. I recently scratched the front element of one of my favorite lenses (a lens hood would not have been able to protect it due to the way it got scratched) , so I am looking for clear protective filters for my other lenses.

Not a fan of slim profile filters ( I use EF lenses on my crop sensor Canon, so a thick filter won't cause any major vignetting issues), so paying extra for a slimmer filter is not my intent.

Seems there are fans who swear by their favorite brands (B+W, Heliopan, Hoya, Tiffen, Zeiss, etc). As expected, non-fans always find faults in the filters of brands they don't like. So, my question for those of you who have owned or tried out protective filters of different brands:

- Which filter is the clearest with the least amount of ghosting issues?

The generic answer to your question would be,
"The best filter with the least effect on your image will be absolutely plano-parallel optical glass coated with the highest quality multicoating"

This might be helpful: https://www.lensrentals.com …uv-filters-on-the-market/ (external link)
I am using the Hoya HD Protector. Great price and I am happy about how they hold up. (Using them on my 70-200 for carrying around because I don't want to deal with the lens hood).

B+W Clear. Those are easy to clean and they are staying clean longer.
