About the same price. Which camera is better for just all around shooting and travelling?

Which camera has better picture quality or performance?

Hands down the G6 is better!

The S2 IS is the same as a powershot A610 camera except it has a long zoom where as the G6 is like a Canon XT or 20D but in a compact body and obviously lacks the interchangable lens part. The G6 does many of the same things as the Rebel XT or 20D. Not to mention the G6 has 7 MP where as the S2 has only 5. The G6 has a CMOS sensor similar to a DSLR where as the S2 doesn't. The G6 is simply the better camera of the two.

And the S2's long zoom? Its not as important as you may think. Half the time you wont use it and when you do the image quality is not as good as a SLR's Long Telephoto anyways. Its ok but is pretty useless as I found out when I owned a S1 IS.

Both are good cameras but the G6 is the better of the two hands down.

The G6 has a CCD not CMOS sensor, but I entirely agree. I researched all cameras in the price range of £250-300 and settled on the G6, and I'm really, really happy with it.

Not as simple as you'd think...

Overall picture quality - G6

To me, it's the closest thing to a DLSR while being pocket size.

Overall usefulness - S2 IS

The S2's Movie mode is unreal for a camera, the zoom can be useful, IS is a great thing to have, flip out LCD also is useful, focus speed is very good.

flip out LCD also is useful

The G6 also has a flip out screen.

Couple more points:
I had the S1 IS which is very similar to the S2 and one thing I hated about it, to the point of my returning the camera to the store was that there is no View finder. The view finder on this camera is a tiny LCD screen. Which sounds OK right? Yes but only when indoors, when out doors and you can't see the monitor you cant see through the view finder either because it is also a LCD screen. In situations of bright light, especially when my back was towards the sun I could not see anything out of it or the monitor.

Here is two web pages you should read first, prior to buying either camera.

The DCResource site says that the G6 movie capabilities leave much to be desired. With the G6 you can do VGA @ 10 fps for 30 seconds, compared to the S2 which does VGA @ 30/15 fps limited in length by the storage space on your card.

Depends what your priorities are in a camera. I don't shoot movies, so for me the G6 would be (and was) my prefered choice :D

Cheers,

Paul.

I'm selling my camcorder on eBay as we speak. I never use it, it cost me $1200 new and I have recorded 2h30m's with it. It's a PITA to get the videos on your computer.

I'd rather have a lesser-quality video when I felt like having video which is just about never. I know the S2 IS is wonderful with movies, just wondering if the G6 can still zoom and stuff like that.

You can't zoom whilst shooting a movie using the G6, like you can using the S2.

Why is it hard to get your movies on your computer?
It is a snap with iMovie to load them and edit them and burn to dvd.

Same here :rolleyes:

Luckily, mine was cheaper (500$) ... but 500$ lost hurt nearly as much.

To be precise, getting the videos to the PC in high quality sucks big time because conversion to MPEG takes hours and requires your constant input ... unless you buy a $$$ video input card like Canopus storm etc.

Should not be that much of a problem if you have a camera that writes directly to DVD's...

Best regards,
Andy

To put that assertion a bit into relation ... the main difference between the G series (or S2IS) and a DSLR is that the sensor of the DSLR is about 9 times the size of the G6 and 15 times that of the S2IS sensor.

These are the exact figures (in mm):

S2 IS 5.3 x 4.0 mm -> 21.2 mm(squ)
G6 7.2 x 5.3 mm -> 38.2 mm(squ)
DSLR: 22.5 x 15.0 mm -> 337.5 mm(squ)
Best regards,
Andy
