Same here

Luckily, mine was cheaper (500$) ... but 500$ lost hurt nearly as much.

To be precise, getting the videos to the PC in high quality sucks big time because conversion to MPEG takes hours and requires your constant input ... unless you buy a $$$ video input card like Canopus storm etc.

Should not be that much of a problem if you have a camera that writes directly to DVD's...

Best regards,
Andy

Andy,

Don't want to start a Mac/pc war, but it really is very simple to import digital video via firewire to a Mac and edit in iMovie and the results are astunding! Then burning to dvd with iDVD is awesome! menues, submenus, chapter markers, slideshow. It is really simple and elegant.

Joe,

you are absolutely right.

If digital video had any importance for me, I'd get a Mac

Best regards,
Andy

Can anybody comment on the G6's movie mode, compaired to the S2 IS?

See this thread https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=145719 for some discussion about the S2's video... especially p. 2. Note that you are limited to 1 Gig for a single video clip.

I don't regret moving from a G5 to the S2, by the way... only thing I miss is the hot shoe capability. Megapixels don't make the photo -- the lens, camera and mostly the shooter do. I wouldn't trade up to the new S3, but you may want to hold off for that before deciding.

It's not so much that it's hard to put movies onto the computer (DV/Firewire+record with Pinnacle) it's that it's time consuming, a 1 hour video takes exactly 1 hour to record, then the time it takes to convert that DV video into MPEG-2/4 for DVD use takes a long time also.

How long does it take to offload a 1 gig card, about a minute and a half. And on 1 gig you get what, approx 13 minutes?

1 gig per file does suck, but I'll keep it in the back of my head that I need to stop the movie every 7-8 minutes and pick back up again. If I was recording some kind of show or performance then it would ruin it, but honiestly...Watching stuff like that sucks. I only use video for family events which can be 3-8 minute clips, those are the only kind of videos I care about. Kids, kids need to be on video...My rule of thumb is record them on video till they hit their teens, then photograph them afterwords. It's nice to be able to look back and see how thier personailty has changed over the years, little things that they did that you never even noticed.

I plan on holding off for the S3 IS or the Panasonic TZ-1, the FZ7's noise is horrible. The TZ-1 has the newest processer and hopefully will deal with noise mcuh better. But I fully understand that the TZ-1's movies and overally picture quality will not hold a candle to the S3 IS.

Now the G series is dead, you should look around for a good run-out price.

With the S2 is. I was also told that you were paying more for the larger zoom....therefore the build and what goes into the S2 is less. Therefore I would tend to go with the G Series. I had the G3 and it took great photos.
