I have had this lens for 6 years and have never been really happy with it. The 55-250 IS STM is on sale right now and I was thinking of getting one to take the place of 75-300 in my bag. The 75-300 is not image stabilized and I think that will make a big difference. I know neither is quality glass buti don’t get a lot of keeper pictures now. $250-300 CDN is my budget. What is the collective wisdom here? Worth while upgrade?

I have the 75-300. By all accounts it is probably the worst lens canon sells in that zoom range. That being said, I do use mine occasionally and have gotten results I am pleased with. I've found focus speed is slow with this lens. It was a 'kit' lens and was replaced asap.

Everything I have read says the 55-250 is a good lens for the money. Ideally you can get to try before you buy just to be sure.

How about the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM Lens as a possible replacement? It has the nano-USM focusing and meant to be better optically than the 55-250. However it is a heavier and bigger lens and not sure what it’s second hand value is in CDN.

My wife uses the 55-250 STM on a 70D and gets very good results with it. I have heard the new 70-300 II mentioned above is also a stellar lens, esp. for the price. I still have my 70-300L, but even used. they are a bit out of your price range.

So, if you can find a way to stretch your budget a bit, I'd try to get the new 70-300 USM... with the Nano-USM, as shocolite suggested.

If not, I think you will see a lot of improvement with the 55-250 STM over your current lens.

Thank you all for the insight. I will check out the 70-300 nano. My research says the 55-250 is a better lens than what I have. Thanks again.

The EF-S 55-250 STM is a stellar lens. It is an incredible bargain for the price. You will not be disappointed.

Check out the sample thread here: https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1353439

The 70-300 II is not as sharp as the 55-250 STM at the long end when shot wide open. At f/8 they are about the same.

Thanks msowsun. I’m pretty sure I am going to get the 55-250.
