I was looking to get a tripod collar mount ring for my 100mm. Has anyone used a long plate like 100mm or 200mm instead of an actual collar? I was thinking mount the plate (furthest point back) to the camera with the plate running underneath the lens, and mount the plate to the tripod using the furthest point forward on the plate? Essentially, mounting point would be where a tripod collar would be, but what about stress at the camera. Would this put more stress at the camera mounting point than say the front heavy 11-24mm?

Hopefully, this makes sense. I thought I'd ask before buying the plate and having no use for it. Thank you.

People do this, like a focusing rail, and it doesn't need to be on the lens/collar, just as you say suggest it can be mounted at 90 degrees on the camera body.

There is possibility of some flexibility, but for it to effect your images, some outside force would have to be at work causing a flex while you are shooting, so I would not worry about it.

As for stress, also only worry about this if the lens is very heavy. For the most part, if the lens is heavy enough to require a collar, it ships with one (think 70-200mm etc.)

You say to use with 100mm, I am assuming one of the 100mm macros that CAN be used with a collar, but they are very light and are perfectly safe to use without one.

For the plate, for this application, i would suggest a fairly sturdy "double decker" both to help eliminate flex in the plate, and to be of more use to you for other applications in the future. You know, that other positive kind of "flexibility" the good kind.

My suggestion, IF you already have an Arca plate on your camera, instead get this;

If you are really worried about supporting a larger lens, but still don't want to go with a lens collar there are these available;

But agiabn, for a 100mm macro, I would consider this overkill.
