I currently have a 6D mark 1 and would love to own a 5D4. My question is, is there that much of an image quality jump or does the price difference mainly due to the extra functions and features of the 5D4?
I been looking and the image quality looks the same to my eyes.

For a while the 6D mk1 had the best IQ quality in the Canon range apart from the 1DX (some would argue it was on par with it)

Then the 1DXII came along and not long after, the 5D4 who both superseded it in terms of noise performance and dynamic range.

With the 5D4 you get these two improvements along with a significant resolution increase. And then there is the AF, build quality, metering etc, all of which are better than the 6D.

Only you can answer the question of if it is worth the extra cash.

Also, looking at small jpg's on the internet will not give you any idea of the improvements in image quality. You need to compare RAW files from both cameras side by side to see if the difference is sufficient for you.

The 5D4 is an excellent all-around performer. Many improvements over the 6D1. Faster shooting rate, 50% more pixels, dual memory cards, better constructed body, and vastly better auto-focus. All this combines for an improved shooting ability.

When I owned the 6D as an intended backup body for a 1D4, 5D3 and 5DSR, I ended up using the 6D way more than the other cameras. To me, it had the best combination of size and image quality. There was something about the 6D image files that cleaned up so much better when using the same post processing actions in PS.

I never had an issue with the focus points, even the outer ones, whether it was outdoor track or gymnastics. I did feel at times the smaller FPS was a hinderance, though.

'It depends' upon what your definition of 'better IQ' happens to be. It should be remembered that IQ is not merely detail resolution alone, and also that detail is the combination of the resolution the lens delivers to the sensor and the sensor itself...so many forget about the lens! So, depending upon YOUR lens inventory, you might see less/more benefit in the 5D4 (vs. 6D) than someone else has experienced with their lens inventory.

Anecdotally we have folks on POTN who were lamenting Canon's trailing performance in low noise high ISO 'pushability' of images for increasing shadow detail, and did consider the 5DIV to be an advancement over the 6D (which prior to that time had led the Canon pack in low noise high ISO pushability). The 5DIV was deemed to finally move Canon virtually on par with Sony in that regard.

I’ve been shooting with the 6D for some time and found that the image quality is the best for its dollars. But if you intend on blowing up your images into posters, the 5D4 would probably do you justice.

Money is the bottom line. Not whether you are a pro, amateur, or hobbyist. If all you want to do is photograph your children in the back yard, still get the 5D if $$ not an issue. I make money from photography, but money is still an issue for me. I would much more prefer the 5D lV, but photography is my second job & I have a wife with medical issues & cannot work. The 6D is an awesome camera, especially @ that price point. You can get 3 of them for the price of 1 5D.

I needed 2 new bodies as my 7Ds were getting old. I got 2 6Ds for $1,998 compared to 2 5Ds at $6,500 (at the time, now $6,000). Just think of the glass you can purchase with the $2,000 you'd save with the 6D.

Money is the issue, you'll love either one.
