Trying to see if I can turn my garage into a makeshift studio with a black cloth backdrop that is retractable. I still want to be able to park the car inside but move it out when im doing a shoot. I dont want to deal with having to set up stands for the backdrop. Thinking of wall mount support, automatic/powered is nice but on my initial findings they seem to be quite pricey. My garage door rails will take off about 10inches off the total height which sucks. Looking for about 10-12ft wide.

Does anyone have recommendations on brands/systems theyve used? Maybe pics so I can see your setup?

Can you shoot with the garage door to your back, towards the back of the garage? You won't have to deal with the rails that way.

I just have a piece of copper tubing suspended on a couple of screw hooks ... works fine, but I only use a 54" background.

I did exactly what you're thinking. Used my garage as a studio, until I changed the furniture out in my LR to be more set change friendly. Huge plus' for the garage was it was fine if I left it set up for days, It had great light and hurricane shutters so it could be pitch black when I needed.
Installed a big wall shaker A/C for the summer months.

I have a fridge and freezer on the back wall, so hanging a backdrop there wast not possible, so I got a 3 roll bracket (external link) and a set of Autopoles (external link) which worked great. I also use 12' crosspoles. Garage is 22x35' with 10 foot ceilings, so plenty of room, and the door support rails didn't interfere.

If you want the drop brackets mounted permanently, then just mount it to some 2x4's that you attach to the garage wall.

The Manfottos are great, and B&H also has Impact branded ones for a few bucks less.

This is the setup in my LR.
