Hey, at least they acknowledged my photo was "copyrighted material".

Doing a recent reverse image search I came across a unique new way that someone is using one of my unlicensed photos (external link). I'm now on the cover of a Joseph Conrad (!) book. So I have that going for me. The chutzpah though of putting "Copyrighted Material" right across the top of the my stolen photo is pretty mind blowing.

Any idea who the publisher is? Looks like his work is out of copyright so anyone can publish a copy. Some small time co probably did this and grabbed an image from Google as a cover hoping you wouldn't notice.

Did that image originally have a © notice on it? Look at Carolyn E Wright's blog. (external link)

I believe this is one of those print-on-demand things.

It had my signature. The site it's being sold on is located in Argentina so I don't really think there is much to be done. I use Pixsy.com to monitor my images for unlicensed use and they will go after the infringers and split any recovered monies. However, Argentina is not a country that they are able to file a case in, so no go on this one.

Thanks for posting about Pixsy.com.

You bet. I tried out a few other options, including Digimarc, which was (surprisingly to me as it was built right into Photoshop) a total waste of time and money. They didn't find a single instance of infringement in 12 months even when I could do my own Google reverse image search and find numerous instances of my images being used without a license.

If you do use Pixsy, you will probably find that some images will be pop up that show 100's of "hits" on sites like Tumblr and Pintrest, but you can then choose to ignore those sites, which really cuts down on the time it takes to review photos that they mark as infringing.
