Has anyone got this combo or tried it Extender EF 2x III (or the 1.4 version) and 70 200 non IS zoom.

Ordering the 70 200 shortly ( big birthday) wondered about anyone's thoughts on adding extenders. Does it work, are the results ok, drawbacks, plusses?

Cheers in advance.

I've tried it with the 2x mkII on a 1D mkIII and while yes it works, it didn't work well imho. Slow to focus, not snappy to lock on, dim viewfinder, the mkIII may be better?
If you absolutely have to use an extender, try the 1.4x as i found that slightly better.
No funds for a native 400 f5.6?

I have the 2x II not the III and yes, it is not the best on my 70-200. 100-400, or the 400 5.6. It works but their is a degrading of photo quality and focus speed. I am going to sell my 400 5.6 Rob since picking up the 100-400..

Cheers for the replies.

Hey squashed, care to post any results from using your 100 400 when you can?

Would be interested in seeing what it's like.

MK III TCs have AF improvements for a number of lenses, just something to think about...

I tried the version 2 2x extender briefly on my 70-200 2.8 IS but didn't like the performance. Got the version 2 1.4 extender and it works well on my 70-200, 100-400, and 135 lenses. Have not used the ver 3 so can't comment.

- No 2X is very good with that older 70-200mm. Workable, but not great.

- The old non IS 70-200mm will gain NO benefit from the 2XMkIII vs. 2X 2

- You don't mention what body you are using, only some of the most recent bodies will gain any benefit from the MkIII 2X.

The MKIII 2x is optically superior to the MKII, so there would be a gain from IQ. It is the 1.4x II vs 1.4xIII that only really seems to have AF differences with hardly any IQ difference.
