Not saying gear doesn't matter, not at all, not once. Saying that if you don't have a good image composition or story a fancy pants camera won't fix that for you. Chasing better gear in the hope it will make your photography better is a loosing prospect. It won't. Only experience brings that. And yes, I've said that before: better gear only makes the job easier, it's doesn't make the images better. I remember shooting Ilford HP5 at 1600 in my 135mm camera and thinking WOW that's amazing, (in the early 90's). I still shoot with that camera and it's a real joy (well a different kind of joy
) to use. I've just finished a series of portraits with it, on Provia 400 too
Oh I shoot an X-T3 because I work as a full time photographer and as such I take an awful lot of images each year, it's better to have a less used camera when you shoot over 100,000 images in a year with it. So it's easy to have the latest model at times. MY X-PRO2 is going strong & I got that in Jan 2016, I was still shooting with that and my X-T1 until I got my hands on an X-T3 last summer, I only sold the X-T1 as a friend was asking me nicely. The X-T2 I bought on a whim just as the price was good so I new I'd be able to sell it on at a good price and not really loose out. Plus there is the official X-Photographer thing so that helps in keeping me with the latest and greatest.
Sure buy new gear, if it's what you 'need' to go out and shoot more, the more you shoot the better you shots will become - as long as you have an open mind about it. I haven't bought a GFX as I can't see how I'll fit one into my work, having said that I do like the feel of shooting with the 50r a lot and might pick one up at some stage, probably not though, but maybe...
1991, testing out the new to the market Ilford XP2 film ( new gear 90's style ).
