I guess you can’t have it all. But should you be asking if you need it?

This just turned up in my YT feed, thought it might resonate one here are how gear is really not that important or at lease no way near as important as we all like to make out.

Casey making some very valid points indeed.

A panasonic GH5 user should be over the moon if the new panasonic FF lumix promises and delivers.

I’ll be one of those people of whom you speak.

Firstly, you seem to assume that everyone shooting m4/3 wants to shoot 135. Newsflash: They already can if they want and have chosen not to.

Secondly, go back to silly-size lenses? Have you seen the size of the new Panny 50 1.4 for that system? Er, no.

Thirdly, it’s a completely different system. Has as much relation to Panny’s m4/3 system as a Sony, Canon or Nikon 135 system.

On the new cameras themselves, expect them to deliver a swift kick to the gonads of the 135 sector. They will be excellent. Only thing that will hold the system back is lenses.

Speaking with the managers running store fronts it appears that the micro 4/3 sales have plummeted compared to years ago. Currently it seems the force is strong for hobby wildlife shooters taking advantage of micro 4/3 two times crop factor and extremely affordable long lenses. M43 had a strong following back in the day as they had a huge selection of glass and aggressive in video features.....then the crop sensor world jumped in.

That new Panny will have lenses from "L Mount alliance" which are Sigma, Leica and panny lenses. The limitations of low light is drastically reduced. No one said you eliminate the M43 from your gear bag........

Knowing Sigma is in the lens alliance they'll happily weld on a dedicated mount, and use what's on the current shelf. Yes indeed the Sigma's will be big and heavy lenses.

As a former m43 shooter the em5 and gh3 was fine. Going x-t10, x-e2, X-T2 was a big leap in higher iso and image quality with a huge variety of glass.

The Camera world has a huge tough crowd in demands and needs. I dare to say if panasonic lovers do not adopt the new Lumix FF the new system will exist but wither. Seems the new s1 and s1R is more of a video dedicated camera. Funny how Jared Polin muttered that he speculates the New Panny will not take flight.

I'm struggling to see how many people will be buying the New Olympus EM1X for $3899 CDN . The Fuji X-t3 is a beast at fraction of the cost as well as substantially better sensor performance.

The GFX is Fuji's "niche" product and seems they will do well as a budget medium format solution. Can't get over how incredibly aggressive all the brands are seeking the green in our wallets.

I'm not into professional video or vlogging. It's great content for Casey to have an episode on video gear. Ahhh man I actually invested time and his counter just incremented by 1 on his YT feed watching that video LOL!!

No real reference to stills photography.........

Why would Fuji release a 135 system if newcomers like Panasonic are going to struggle? Fuji have things nailed bang on I reckon, what with the perpetual wang-dangling and measure-bating over sensor size. They understand that there is mucho cash in tempting all those people using tiny sensors. They’re offering much more affordable bragging rights than have been offered previously...

You know the bit where he said ‘if all it took to be good was have the right equipment, the people who had the most money would always win... ...Trust me, who ever made that [pan] movie with their $150000000 budget has waaaaay better cameras that you could ever afford’.

Talking about how your gear should not get in the way of your creativity.

‘Story is everything’.

Doesn’t matter if it’s video or just one still, if there is no solid content to your image no one will look twice. Having a high end camera will do nothing for you there.

Indeed....”Better” gear is even better in capable hands. Disregarding dramatics in the video ....you also cannot say gear doesn’t matter. Casey makes a good point but Kim don’t generalize. Naming a small handful of movies shows great skills and good eye. This does not carry weight across the board for every single film maker. Nice warm and fuzzy story but casey sure got plenty of profitable hits on YouTube!!

I sure would hope people have common sense that gear does not compose a shot.

Talking about Gfx...... Fuji would starve if there was no such thing as gear lust or people wanting “better” gear. Why do you own an XT3 if you have older gear that works?? Faster Af? Why not use a 16-50mm kit lens instead of a 16-55 f2.8??

Same goes your iq or “capturing the moment” would suffer using first generation Fuji crops for fast paced events/sports etc due to high iso and dreadfully slow af performance.

Plain and simple, better tools makes life easier. This is of coarse as long as it meets your application.

Not saying gear doesn't matter, not at all, not once. Saying that if you don't have a good image composition or story a fancy pants camera won't fix that for you. Chasing better gear in the hope it will make your photography better is a loosing prospect. It won't. Only experience brings that. And yes, I've said that before: better gear only makes the job easier, it's doesn't make the images better. I remember shooting Ilford HP5 at 1600 in my 135mm camera and thinking WOW that's amazing, (in the early 90's). I still shoot with that camera and it's a real joy (well a different kind of joy  ) to use. I've just finished a series of portraits with it, on Provia 400 too

Oh I shoot an X-T3 because I work as a full time photographer and as such I take an awful lot of images each year, it's better to have a less used camera when you shoot over 100,000 images in a year with it. So it's easy to have the latest model at times. MY X-PRO2 is going strong & I got that in Jan 2016, I was still shooting with that and my X-T1 until I got my hands on an X-T3 last summer, I only sold the X-T1 as a friend was asking me nicely. The X-T2 I bought on a whim just as the price was good so I new I'd be able to sell it on at a good price and not really loose out. Plus there is the official X-Photographer thing so that helps in keeping me with the latest and greatest.

Sure buy new gear, if it's what you 'need' to go out and shoot more, the more you shoot the better you shots will become - as long as you have an open mind about it. I haven't bought a GFX as I can't see how I'll fit one into my work, having said that I do like the feel of shooting with the 50r a lot and might pick one up at some stage, probably not though, but maybe...

1991, testing out the new to the market Ilford XP2 film ( new gear 90's style ).

If the Fuji GFX performed identical to the XT3 I will buy it as an amazing universal application tool. Fuji colours are very pleasing.

AF, then you need to wait for GFX100s. Video won't happen (could be wrong). Rest, even GFX50s blows XT3.

I finally got 45mm f2.8. I had Canon 35L version 1 as well as Sigma 35mm f1.4 art. I am amazed with Fuji lens. It is big but at the same time light. Fuji could have made this f2, that would have been awesome.

I think Panasonic did good by going with bigger body. Sony's are just too small and weird when hand holding (specially with their nicer G master lenses) and I have very small hands. Just the panasonic lens prices seems off the roof for the f4 versions.

Sony A7rIV, , Tamron 28-200mm, Sigma 40mm f1.4 Art FE, Sony 85mm f1.8 FE, Sigma 105mm f1.4 Art FE

No Video! You mean to say there will be no 4k/30 10Bit 4:2:0 internal (4:2:2 out) and have IBIS?

I read more about GFX100s and it seems 4k video on it. So looks pretty good.

That the marketing people are able to convince camera buyers about the need for 24X36mm sensors does not prove they are right, only that they are really good at marketing

If history has proven anything. it's that evolution always wins!!

you can get 65+ backs for pretty good money these days (relatively) if you don't mind shooting CCD and it's proper full frame too, also if you don't mind the huge 350Mb images it pops out...
