Recover formatted CF card?

I hadn't realized that my canon 5d was recording videos to my CF instead of SD, and I was backing up off my SD. It's not many videos, but I'd like to get (some?) of them back if possible.

I just finished formatting it in-camera - woops! I also did a previous format after another backup, so there may be "2 stages" of video files I'd like to get. At the very least, I'm hoping to recover the latest set as nothing has been written since the in-camera format?

It's a Lexar Professional 1066x CF card. I tried Recuva and it reported finding a bunch of files, said many weren't recoverable, and it seems to have found ZERO .MOV files.

Try EASEUS.

Try EASEUS.

Link is https://www.easeus.com …ata-recovery-software.htm (external link)

You might also try Lexar Image Rescue at http://www.lexar.com/support/downloads/ (external link) but at the moment it is temporarily unavailable.

If multiple utilities don't work, give up and consider it a learning experience.

I've since learned what"caused" it - since I always back up via my SD and the cf is the in camera backup, SOMETIMES I forget to put the SD back in. But as a result, when this happens, the video record mode switches to CF and didn't switch back when SD is inserted

Good to know! I've always been a firm proponent of a direct connection of camera to PC for downloads so I seldom remove cards

UPDATE: I tried recuva but the recovered files weren't playable. Tried EaseUS, and it appears half of the files got recovered? Weird that it goes in sequence play-unplayable-playable-unplayable so not sure what's going on? The unplayable ones are still many hundreds of megabytes, appropriate for a video file.

It also recovered 36gb of SWF files, which makes no sense because 1) that's a lot of GB!; and 2) I only used this for my 5d camera... there never would be SWF files.

So - any advice for repairing some of the recovered files, or another reliable software to try?

Longshot, but see what happens if you change the SWF to MOV and attempt to open it.

Physical or Logical damage is mostly repairable, and there are plenty of ways to recover data from CF cards in its case. You can perform CHKDSK or use photo recovery software like Stellar.
Check this article to know how you can recover the files from CF cards; https://www.stellarinfo.com …tos-from-corrupt-cf-card/ (external link)

Since this thread dates from January 2019 I suspect the OP has moved on.
