Well, pretty apparent that stands for
EOS R Program, the amateur oriented second camera in the R series, which Canon expects to be EOS Real Popular

Aimed at the lower end, it would be limited in terms of the Creative modes offered.

"Rebel" was already used (in the US, only) for simpler models, so now they go for "Pebble".

I would love to see the “Elan” name brought back. I think it would fit since the original US Elan model (100) sat between the consumer Rebels and the not-quite-pro 10S.

Canon EOS R7, M5, 100 (film), and Sony α6400
I have an orange cat and a brown cat. In HSL, they're both orange.

I've got it! The P in EOS RP is "Pocket", since it is going to be a very small APS-C version that fits in the pocket.

I cannot believe it will be FF. What could Canon take away from the EOS R for $600 that will leave a good FF camera?

- No flip touch screen?
- Remove IBIS (oh wait, the EOS R didn't have that already)
- A single card slot? (oh wait, already done)
- Oh, let's remove 4Mpx and charge $600 less... doubt that is it either
- Let's remove the 4K video mode.
- Perhaps no EVF, that would be fun.

The EOS R is pretty much the entry level FF, it is hard to imagine one lesser model at $600 less. There just isn't $600 worth of items to take away that would leave much of a FF camera.

How about P = Persuasive

To some people $1500 may sound more Persuasive than $2299

The suggested sensor size doesn't have me curious near as much a few other things, like will the screen articulate? Are the batteries the same? Will it be missing both joystick and touchbar?

Just added an edit to the OP.

But Canon Rumors added an update about a DUAL CARD camera similar to the EOS R, aside from the EOS RP

The RP is on BH photo site. It's real.... real confusing that is. Is this a 6D gone mirrorless? Or did they take the guts out of the M and slap them in a body with a full frame sensor? It has a grip... but not necessarily a battery grip. Suppposidely you can still access the cameras battery with the grip installed. Looking forward to seeing what in the heck that is.

I do like that Canon is finally adopting the USB charging thing. I love that I can attach a back up battery to my Sony and keep shooting all day long while charging at the same time. Claims to be 5 frames per second, and has eye detection aF. Flippy screen and .. and up to 40k ISO. To bad Canon doesn't have the compare thing working yet for this camera, because it would be real interesting to see what is different between this and the R.

Expecting no weather sealing. No flickie thing in the back. Less battery life. Slower AF maybe? No real battery grip.... who knows what else will differentiate the R from the RP.
