My current CF card is too slow for my Canon EOS-7D to record 1080 videos. The buffer overflows in about 3 seconds. What speed do I need ? Any recommendations ?

Many Thanks

That is a bit surprising. Can you supply the exact details of the CF card you are currently using?

Good discussion on the requirements at https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3014406 (external link). Additional info in the manual (see http://gdlp01.c-wss.com …02580/02/eos7d-im2-en.pdf (external link)) at pages 156 to 159.

It's a old CF (came with the camera - used so I don't know). I suspect the card itself could be near its end of life.

Can the 7D use an SD? If it can and with the improved speeds of SD type cards I'd suggest you get something like the Sandisk Extreme Plus in 90 mb/sec or faster. You can get a 64gb fr $29 (normally $45) at Best Buy. See https://www.bestbuy.com …romo/sandisk-extreme-plus (external link).

Edit, apparently the 7D is CF only so suggest the card at https://www.bestbuy.com …d/2037002.p?skuId=2037002 (external link)

The owners manual for my 5D4 says use at least 60 mb/sec for 1080 movies. Cards are pretty cheap - get a good fast one. Plus it's always a good idea to have more than one card.

Also, even much newer bodies like the 5D3 were terribly slow with SD, regardless of the cards speed, it lacked the latest SD compatibility.

With CF cards, one can get up to 5 times faster results on bodies of this generation.

I'd recommend a Sandisk CF Extreme or Extreme Pro. The Ultra Might do it. (rated @ 50MBs vs. 120 and 160)
