I’m still shooting the original 5D. It Still shoots great images but it being 14 years old now I’m looking to upgrade. Either to the mark III or Mark-IV. Is there any huge differences between the that will make me pick the IV over the III. The mark III in the used market is very affordable. The Mark IV is still up there in price.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thx

I’m in the same boat! I’ve been using a pair of 5d’s for 9 years now and as much as I love the 5d I feel like every camera brand is moving towards Mirrorless system. I’d still keep the 5d’s as there really is no value or point in selling, the New RP was announced and though it’s geared towards entry level it wouldn’t break the bank to get one. I don’t do video so those features or lack of doesn’t bother me.

I, too, need to upgrade soon.

I have no interest at all in the 5D3, but really, REALLY want the 5D4. . But I'll need to wait until the prices on used ones comes down significanty. . Can't imagine me paying more than $1500 for one.

I upgraded from the 5DC to the 5D2 and the jump in IQ was pretty significant as well as the improvement to the feature set. Micro-focus adjustments alone was worth it to me. I skipped the 5D3 as for what I was shooting, the difference in performance and IQ was minimal. The 5D4 however is just about as perfect of a camera as Canon has ever put out. The IQ is significantly better than the 5DII which was significantly better than the 5DC, and the feature set has just about everything you would want. Skip the 5DIII unless the price is your main upgrade factor and go for the 5DIV.

I was close to buying the R over the weekend.

The size is what made me change my mind and go for a 5D markIV.

If this mirrorless thing is going to be the future ..... size wise it’s bad for me.

It just doesn’t feel right in my hands. I have large hands and the 5D just feels sooooo much better.

As I mentioned in another reply. The EOS R is too small. It just doesn’t feel right in my hands. I’ll won’t but something that I don’t feel comfortable shooting just because it’s cheaper than the 5D mark IV

Id be spending more yes but I plan on keeping the 5D mark IV for a long time. As I don’t shoot professional or for a job but I like to buy the best I can afford for the long term. And if that’s a few $1000 dollars more I have no issue.

As a guy who did the upgrade from a 5Dc to a 5D3 and now to a 5D4, I can say that you can’t go wrong either way! The 3 and 4 are both wonderful camera bodies that deliver great IQ even at higher ISO’s. I upgraded to the Mk4 because I thought it would aid me in the studio having the WIFI capability. I shoot tethered in my studio so I thought it would eliminate the necessity of a cord. I was disappointed in the speed of the image transfers and went back to the Mk3 and continue to shoot with the cord when in the studio......the Mk4 does seem to be a slight upgrade when shooting general imagery but it is just a slight one. I haven’t priced either lately but I would go with whatever is the better deal between the Mk3 and the Mk4.

5D4 over the 5D3:

- Better AF system
- More resolution
- Better low (<800) ISO dynamic range (clean shadows)
- Better high ISO by a bit
- Flicker Control
- Faster SD slot
- Fully working auto ISO in manual mode with EC
- Multi-shot NR mode that will merge multiple high ISO shots into a single clean frame
- Intervalometer
- DPAF and 4K
- Touch screen

If you are coming from a 5dc you'll be amazed with the 5dmk3. IMO if you have the budget for a 5dmk4 you'll be very happy with it.

Going from the 5dc to 5dmk2 there was quite a nice jump in IQ. You will see that the 5dmk2,3,4 all have digititis. The beautiful analog organic looking files from your 5Dc will be GONE!!!! Please note every newer FF sensor have this sharp digital look. I will say my Fuji X-t2 has a calm looking render like the older gen 5dc.

The 5dmk2 and 5dmk3 both have very similar looking image quality when you shoot in good natural light or when you bounce flash indoors (casual/hired work). The 5dmk3 autofocus and overall body performance feels more responsive than the 5dmk2. The 5dmk2 high iso is better than the 5dc. I would say pushing the 5dmk2 you can possibly stomach the image quality at iso 5000 with slow shutter speeds. Using my aging 16-35 f/2.8mk2 I barely even notice any differences between the 5dmk2 and 5dmk3. You can push the 5dmk3 much harder in low light and retain clean iso files. I'm happy to say there is a noticeable difference in IQ between 5dmk3 and the 5dmk4.

The 5dmk2 and 5d3 still can have that signature magenta colour when you uplift shadows in post.

In due time mirrorless will eventually take over the Canon world. The RF mount glass line is in full force and I can bet EF glass will take a back seat. It's inevitable that the mirrorless world is going to take over in time.

I’ve changed my mind about the EOS R..... I’m allowed to do that right? Hahahahaha....anyhow....

After spending more time with it I got used to the feel of it. I was back and forth between the 5D markIV and The Eos R..... but the more I played with it the more I took a liking to it. I ended up buying and I think it will suits me better for where I like to take my camera. I think I can and will get used to the smaller size.

So far I¢m amazed at the image quality.... coming from the classic 5D i knew it was going to be a big difference. One thing I’m trying to get used to is not hearing the mirror!

I haven't posted in this forum for several years, but I thought this was the right thread to get back :) I've had a bit of a break from photography, but want to get back into it. I've got two 5Dc cameras in the bag, and some nice but older EF lenses. I was looking at getting a used 5D3, but am now thinking more and more that going for a Canon EOS R would be the better choice. It seems like the mirrorless systems are the future for most photographers.

If I take into account that I might need to replace the shutter at some point if I buy a used 5D3, the price difference between the two isn't that huge.

I'm afraid nothing will replace 5Dc. I'm on my second MKII and it isn't much better.
Worse AF actually.
I would skip newer 5 and get 6Dc, if DSLR :).
But, honestly, RP is new 5Dc, IMO.

Huh? The AF of the 5DII shared the 5Dc's AF but other than that, the 5DII was head and shoulders improved in all other areas. Also, both the 5DIII and 5DIV AF performance rates right up there with the best Canon has delivered. Also, the RP isn't a 5Dc replacement, it's a mirrorless 6DII and the R a mirrorless 5DIV.

Not sure I would classify the R as a mirrorless 5DIV. I'd say the RP is a mirrorless SL2 and the R is a mirrorless T7i, at least in terms of how they feel and handle. I went into Best Buy with an open mind, and was scared sh***less by how terrible the new Canon and Nikon FF mirrorless stuff feels. I don't consider myself a luddite, but I can't see mirrorless holding a candle to the 5DIV (or even 6D, yikes) handling-wise, at least until we get an RF 1D, which will doubtlessly be $6-7k. I've made peace with the 5D (and 6D) series since it will be what I'll be using forever, if I can get away with it.

Anyway, to the OP, I think it's 5DIV or bust if you're upgrading from a 5Dc, for a bunch of reasons.

I went from 5Dc to 6Dc because I dropped the 5D and knocked the AF out of alignment. It works 100% aside from that. I upgraded to the 6D, and while I like it, I miss the IQ from the 5Dc - it just had a different look. Everything else is better on the 6D, but the images. They're cleaner, however, they don't have the look.

I now go back and fourth between my 6D and Fuji X100F.
