I am looking to do more vlogs in the field and am currently using GoPro as primary video camera although that may change.

I've got a "selfie stick with built in tripod" I use for handheld or ground shots, buts it's nowhere near tall enough for me to set up, stand and talk to it. My tripod and camera will already be set up for the shot so I can't use my existing tripod either.

I thought about a spiked monopod to stick into the ground but although stability isn't crucial, I'd worry about it swaying too much?

Is there a really compact tripod that still gets up decently tall? Obviously not worried about things like vibrations as it won't be for stills shooting.

Compact+light is key! ߘ

For a GoPro you are better off with a lightstand rather than tripod in most settings. Lighter, cheaper, more compact, raises higher and can be used for lighting in other scenarios. Setup is also faster than a tripod. You can use any lightstand, but I typically set up the GoPro using either a Manfrotto Nano stand $57 or Manfrotto Nanopole stand $75. They weigh only 2 lbs. and fold down to 19” and raise up to 7 feet. The Nanopole also works on uneven ground and the legs are removeable to use as a boom. I use a Giotto’s Mini Ball Head $15 to mount and aim the GoPro. (Another option is the Joby ball head.) While I have many tripods, this set up always makes more sense for a stationary GoPro. The whole thing is stable at 5 feet, or just place a camera bag, bottled water or rock on the legs for added stability. For windy situations, you should use an actual tripod.

Hmm lightstand is an interesting option indeed. I'll look into the options - I might just go for an amazon knockoff sort of thing
