I've worked with Canon EOS Utility, which is tediously basic.
I've tried Lightroom, which has problems holding on to the connection, and that's worse than being basic.

Capture One Pro is more than I want to spend for just tethering, and I'm already have too much sweat and blood and a bit of change every month already invested in Photoshop for editing.

There's Breeze Systems camera controller, but its over $200. I already use their Downloader Pro, but I don't want to pay that much money for a tool just to tether.

Has anyone found anything in the zero to $100 range worth using?

Have you tried the tool over at https://www.tethertools.com/tethering-software/ (external link)? You input the camera make, model and computer O/S and it spits out some utilities that will work.

Yes, and I'm looking at three possibilities from there.

I use DSLR remote pro, it's reasonable affordable, very simple to set up and use and easily the most reliable and consistent tethering software I've ever used.
