I've had my T3i since 2012. I would still consider myself new, to photography. I have gotten some wonderful mileage out of my little camera. Since I started having an interest in photography, I've always heard...glass is more important than the camera. But part of me thinks it would be drastically overkill to put a $1500 lens on a 7 year old, $200 body. But I'm also itching to get into a full frame (6D) at some point as well.

I have two cameras, a T3i and T6 (Birthday gift from Mom) and 5 lenses. 2, EF-S and 3 EF. I understand the EF-S lenses will be cropped on a FF. I don't use the kit lenses very much anyway. My favorite right now is my EF, 28mm F2.8.

I've also recently fell into a pile of studio gear. I now have 7 strobes, backdrops, stands...Everything except room to store it/use it. After getting this stuff, I've been invited to shoot everything from Babies to Cars. So, from the way things are going. I'm going to be getting into portraits. But I love shooting still life, street, landscapes and the occasional animal.

Basically. Has anyone used such a lens/body combo? what are you thoughts about it? Should I wait on the body or get the lens first?

EDIT:
I attend a few conventions thought out the year. So there is/would be a need for some handheld, low lighting shots and places that don't allow the use of a flash. But I'm open to hearing about the F/4 as well.

I've had a few 70-200mm f/2.8L lenses in the past. All the way back on my XTi. The lens is fantastic. It won't be as sharp on a crop as it would on a full frame but it's still going to be a great lens. I would personally probably upgrade the body first and add the 70-200 later especially if you have lenses you're already happy with.

Good call. Since I have the 55-250 I should probably use that to get a feel for the 70-200. It would suck to drop that kind of coin on a lens and not like it.

Might be worth getting a copy for a couple days from lensrentals.com or a similar site. Even still I'd probably lean towards a new body but I may be projecting. I have a new (to me) t6i and I have this nasty full frame itch in the back of my brain that keeps growing. It might kill me if I don't buy a 5d soon! haha.

Solid advice! I just went out on lunch with my 55-250 to see what it might be like with a lens of that length. I was shooting my truck and I ended up being at least 30' away just to get the whole thing in a 3/4 shot (currently on my computer at work, so no post processing photos). I'd image with a person I could be a little closer haha.

I've tried it on my 500d/T2i and was very pleased with the quality the combo produces. great colour and detail. Gives the sensor the best image. Not overkill I even use my 600mm f4 is with the 550d sometimes.

If you want 2.8, buy it. If not just use the 50-250 it is a good lens. Discussion about not putting expensive glass on less expensive bodies for whatever reason, is silly. I've used my 70-200 on a XSi and SL1, it was simply the best option.

Of course it all boils down to being honest with yourself and knowing what is holding you back in your pursuit. Renting to try out a single lens is usually more expensive than buying a used copy and reselling it later. I bought a used 100-400 and sold it 6 months later for the same price.

Personally, I think if you are going to start doing portraits (& charging for them), you need to upgrade both. Not necessarily buying the 70-200mm right away, but a good piece of affordable glass such as the 85mm F/1.8

This lens is awesome for the price.

You can do a lot with crop sensors & I have. Up until September that is all I've owned. If I were to do portraits or weddings I would want a FF. I got the 6D & it's awesome. Now, that being said, you are in a controlled environment & will be able to shoot @ low ISO so I'm not saying portraits cant' be done without a FF but I would personally prefer it.

EDIT: I do think you can get off to a good start with new glass, new body down the road.

5 lenses. 2, EF-S and 3 EF. I understand the EF-S lenses will be cropped on a FF.

Just to make sure you understand - EF-S lenses will not crop on a FF - they will physically not mount. If you do manage to mount an EF-S lens on a FF body, the mirror will hit the back of the lens, which may cause other issues. But you won't end up with a picture, and no picture, no "cropped" image.
There are APS-C lenses made by 3rd party makers that will mount and will crop. They have EF mounts (not EF-S) and some do work well, others will give you bad vignettes

Thats a lot of good info! Thanks!! I think I'm going to practice with the lens I currently have just to get used to focal length. I've been shooting a lot with my 28mm 2.8 (EF lens) so I'm accustom to being close to whatever I'm shooting. For what its worth, I'd be willing to throw $130 at renting a $1500 lens to see if its something I'd even like. As mentioned, that lens could be bought/sold for the same price as well...

Yes. I've seen the difference in the shape of the two, side by side.
