Thoughts on value of a Sigma 120-300 2.8 non OS lens

Wondering what people would say / feel is a fair price for a used (but excellent condition) Sigma 120-300 2.8 APO HSM non OS lens?

I've seen some go on fleabay for $1000 US - sound about right, too high or low??

Thinking about getting one locally priced just under $1000US to try out - figuring / hoping I' could sell it for same price if I don't like it?

i'd say too high...i'd say like $800 or so..
