Yes, everybody has different pain points, I guess it is up to Pekka on how or if it will be managed. We aren't going to come to a consensus here I am sure. I don't mind warnings if they occur every once in a while, I have a pretty high "application warning" pain tolerance, I probably hit about 1000 such little warnings, are you sures, relogins, etc popups through a course of a day, both in my career and in personal time.

If I had a new one that showed up maybe like 8 times in the course of a year, that certainly wouldn't be noticeable to me personally, nor would it be intrusive or offensive. There is no ill intent behind it, nor a real human, just a few lines of code.

Perhaps like so many other settings Pekka opens up to users, under some sort of thread management section, add a flag that says "Warn Me On Old Threads", and it defaults to true for all accounts. Then the veterans amongst us can go set that off so we don't see the warning, but new members will.

Perhaps a good compromise?

Regarding this...

You've probably seen the recent term "mansplaining." It's like that

That feels pretty sexist to me personally. If that exists, then most certainly "womansplaining" exists and has for centuries, but guys don't draw attention to it. I don't subscribe that kind of stereotyping, EVERYBODY talks down to each other, it is not a gender thing, no matter what today's societal dramas are about.

I also don't get why one would use that term to describe warning popups? That is just software, and doesn't even involve gender topics at all.

How about "Warn Me On Annoying Threads"

I'm sure this thread would trigger a flag.

Just ignore me. I'm in one of my wise guy moods. ;-)a

I'm usually not bothered by old posts brought to life.
But there are some that do. For example, someone will ask which laptop is best for photo editing. I'll start reading and then discover the thread is 6 years old. And the same question has been asked many times since then.

So your idea is reasonable.

I didn't mean to imply that only one sex can be condescending. Mansplaining is only an example I used as an easy way to get the point across. There are also doctorsplaining, ITpersonsplaining, and adolescentsplaining, among others, but "mansplaining" has arisen as a popular term that I believe will be understood to represent the class of 'splainers. "Womansplaining" isn't in wide use (yet).

I hadn't heard of any of that, but we are in the midwest, so we are still a bit laid back and maybe behind the times a bit. ;)

We could coin this as "appsplaining". :D

..... Per this, does it make sense to have a warning on the submit of a reply or quoted reply where the source post is older than 365 days?

But the slight annoyance of that one person hitting a button certainly outweighs the annoyance of others and the needless posts after that, wouldn't it?....

Maybe we need an "I'm Annoyed" button and another that says "I don't care if you're annoyed".

What if I found this thread annoying, but replied to it anyway ... what does that say about me?

I'm the administrator on another forum (American Association of Woodturners (external link)) and old threads get exhumed now and then. Years ago people used to get all up in arms about it as if some cardinal sin had been committed. In reality it might have just been a violation of a completely arbitrary rule. Reviving old threads doesn't even show up on my list of things that have any significant meaning. If someone asks the OP a question and I know that the OP is deceased I will privately let them know. Sometimes a resurrected thread will take on a vigorous new life.

Pekka asked that I create the post, so I moved the discussion of the other thread here, that is all.

The point is that this is a programmatic change, not a moderator process change or monitoring step. Software exists to make things easier and more efficient, so if just a little bit of programming helps folks understand they are replying to someone that is no longer a member or that the thread is years old certainly cannot make the forum worse to use.

I have had to put in countless business rules in our various enterprise solutions due to things just like this. Spend a bit of time once, and the system honors it for years to come. :)

Why do people need a waring? The date and time of a post is clearly displayed in the top righthand corner of each post, and the age of the thread is clearly displayed underneath the thread title on the New Posts page.

He should have had a warning pop up!

Seriously, after thinking about it more, I can see the merit in the idea. :)

Unfortunately, this won't stop the spammers from waking up 9 year old threads. :(

Maybe there needs to be a 30 post minimum before you can reply to a thread older than X as well? ;) (just kidding)

Was the deleted post really spam? It seemed on topic and didn't contain advertising.

Yes it was spam. One post from a new member about some software being sold. Google 'tornado eos' for more info.
