I have seriously been considering switching to Nikon just for the D850 since Canon doesn’t have a competitor but just have the concern about how fast I can make the transition. Currently have a 1DX, 500 F4 VI, 24-105, 1.4x, 2x and 430ex II. 99% of the time I use the 500 for wildlife and aviation photography with a TC but just want to be able to crop a little more with the D850 for when 1000mm isn’t enough. I love the 1DX and considered the 5DS but it lacks a decent AF system.

I buy all of my stuff used but in great shape. The D850 doesn’t look like it will be hard to come by but the 500 F4 VR version 1 seems to be rare on Fred Miranda. I think I may have to spend 1k in difference to switch to the equivalent equipment and would prefer to sell my stuff first before switching. Has anyone made a move similar to this with a super telephoto?

Just recently sold my entire Canon kit to make the transition to Nikon & the D850. Sold a 1Dx along with a 500 f/4 and much more. Ultimately ended up picking up a D500 along with the D850 + 24-120, 16-35, 80-400 & 20/1.8. Have ordered the currently backordered Nikon 500 f/5.6 PF. I realize I am sacrificing 1 stop Canon vs Nikon, but am very much looking forward to the diminished size and weight. An effective 750mm on the D500 will work for me as I typically had the 1Dx + 500/4 + 1.4x tele, yielding f/5.6 max aperture anyway.
