I am sure your time frame changes depending on the time of the year including time changes.....

You are very welcome!

not as much as you would think. I can always depend on 10-12, mid-winter tends to be 9:30 or so to 12:15

The California smoke is now at least as far as Eastern Nebraska.
It is The sun won't set for at least another hour after this image was taken, but one can easily look at the sun. No filter used, the image is SOOC.
No visible sunspots today.

Crazy smoke, really is terrible out there.

On another note, imagine long ago without today's tech, moments like this from natural issues allowed ancient eyes to look at the photosphere and not be blinded by UV/IR as most of it soaked up in that smoke and being able to see the sun, a star, as a sphere, it has a definitive shape, and you can start to see other features, such as major sunspots that move daily and seems to rotate a specific rotation day to day, and what people saw during ancient solar maximums with the help of natural issues like smoke or other things that gave us moments to look at the raw fury of a star. Very cool stuff.

Very best,

processing helps a lot but it had a overall softness. But I couldn't pass up a large prom and an active region, we have had too few of those lately

I've decided to never post in this thread as the images in here are ridiculously awesome.

Do you own a telescope with the proper filters to take photos of the sun? I am sure both Martin and Jeff would gladly give you some tips!

I agree with Charles, Martin and I would be happy to help. There is also a forum that has a great Solar section www.theskysearches.com (external link) alot of solar heads there.

Astronomyforum.net used to be good but had some issues so most solar heads went to the skysearchers. Facebook, Solar activity, is a good site so is the Charlie Bates Solar Project.

Lots of information.

Martin has a better setup than I do and does great work!

I love solar because I am awake, no bugs, and the sun changes minute by minute!

Oct 27th, 2020

AR2778 is of cycle 25 and has been flaring this morning. A nice dipole with several umbra and some with surrounding penumbra and light bridges and looks like a class D spot. Presented in two wavelengths, hydrogen alpha (chromosphere) and a looser 656nm showing the photosphere under-nearth, to show the different features and structures in the same spot but different layers and elements. Noted bottom left in the HA portion of the image is an active flare occurring. Both native B&W and falsely colored images and inverted images presented.

I've been out of commission for about 2 months or so, due to the non-stop hurricane and tropical storm weather near me in the gulf, along with a dead laptop that I had to work around.
