I am sure that most will remember the girl on the National Geographic cover that was crazy popular, later they showed her picture after living a very hard life, there was a very dramatic difference between the two.
Getting more to the point, Tony Northrup just released a (different kind of) video that tells the (supposedly) true story of how that cover shot came to be.
(I say, "supposedly" because I have not double-checked Tony's version, but I do trust him)

If you have the time, please watch this video, you can skip the commercials if they bother you, but he is not accepting money for this video, and is donating money to a worthwhile charity.
This is a VERY good video, about the photographer that came to take it, and the good and bad about it all, I know that I was really surprised about the new revelations (at least to me) about how the photographer actually got the photo.

Anyway, I hope that this is in the right place...
Oh yeah, please do not make this political, this is about the girl and the photographer only... I am only posting this because it is about the girl's side of the story, it is very interesting and it only goes to show how we seem to never really get the real story sometimes.

Thanks!
Randy

Can't say I'm surprised. On the one side, it wouldn't be the first time that Mr McCurry has manipulated photos; on the other side, National Geographic, like most publications has an agenda they want to push with their 'journalism'.

People think that NatGeo and journalistic magazines present the naked, unbiased truth. Not at all. There's always manipulation and a political spin. Sorry, not wanting to push a certain partisan view here, but it's impossible not to mention politics when discussing something that was clearly politicised from the start.

Mr Northrup makes good points, and when you read stuff about this particular woman and you piece it together you find out that he's not lying.

Thanks for posting that.

You speak the truth.
It's a horrible thing, that might have ended with a good ending, but we'll never really know that either. I wish that little girl could get a ctrl Z in her life. :)

YouTube has removed the video.

Before rushing to judgment about NatGeo and the press in general, please do at least superficial research. The story has been very well reported.

And yes, you are quite right. General and extreme attacks on journalism have become not only toxic but political in the extreme.

What are talking about, George? What story? Give us some meat to what you say.

If there is some untruths about anything at all, I'll remove the thread if it's wrong.
I will say this though, I am not going to go out and spend a lot of time 'trying to' find stuff disproving what Tony Northrup says in his video, I did say, "supposedly". I take Tony at his word.
If you have other proof that we can see, let's see it.

I just did a quick search, you are right about YouTube removing the link, but, they are VERY political in their actions, I wasn't being.

Show us some proof or a link, please, I am interested in what you are saying.

For the record, I am not judging the "press in general", only what was in the video.
I wasn't trying to smear the press or anyone at all, I just assumed (and possibly assumed wrong) that photographers here would like to see what happened to the little girl, and I bet that I am not the only one that was curious.

Just my interpretation–I thought George was cautioning all readers to look into other sources for the story reported in the video, about how the original photo was made and what happened in the girl's life later on, now that the video's unavailable.

May be, I couldn't tell, I'm not upset at all, I just couldn't understand what was being said, I guess. :)

Thank you, Ms. Look! :)

Wonder why they would remove it. Can't say I'm surprised either.

Sorry, George, but I'm sticking to my guns on this one. I am disgusted with Nat Geo and most current journalism and I say the media isn't worth the paper it prints its stories on. As a geoscientist I've done much more than 'superficial' research on a certain topic on which Nat Geo and friends have been banging a drum for years now, and I've found nothing but alarmism, cherry picking, story spinning and total obscuring of the truth in their 'journalism'. Their objective is not information, but indoctrination: ramming the official narratives down readers' throats, and engaging in character assassination of anyone who disagrees, no matter how sound and truthful the dissenter's points and research are.
