Are banned members completely shut out of their account, or can they just not post?

.
I have gotten to know some people on here fairly well, and then they get banned. . I try to reach out to them via PM, to let them know that I appreciated their presence here, and to give them my contact info so that we can continue to communicate, outside of POTN. . But I never get replies to these PMs, and the PMs are perpetually marked as "UNREAD".

So I am wondering, when someone gets banned, is it just a ban from posting? . Or does the ban completely lock them out of any account activity?

Even if someone is not allowed to post to POTN anymore, it would be nice if there was still a way to communicate with them, especially for those folks who I don't know at all outside of POTN.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I have run into the same issue at times, sometimes from folks who I considered quite reasonable and was really surprised to see the BANNED banner. But having myself been temporarily banned for an admittedly stupid exchange, I suspect that once banned, that person will no longer check POTN not log in.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Yes, banned means log in is not possible, and no email notifications are sent.

Bans have always a valid reason. A nice guy may be banned, too, and the reason is shown to him. We do not share reasons publicly, as bans are personal and their reasons are between mods and the member.

If you have correspondence with a member via email, bans do not and can not prohibit that in any way. Sending PM is possible, they will get those when the ban is over.

Please excuse me for laughing. I couldn't help it.

People can break rules on any board that has rules. They can be belligerent and insulting, for instance. This board also has a few rules that aren't universal. Don't discuss religion or politics, don't have two accounts at once, don't post pornographic images . . .

We could just link down to the button where it says rules. ;) I think they are a bit easier to read. Also, I believe people can decide to create a new identity, which has value these days, and that would cause them to have their old accounts marked as banned.

I think that the most common reason for people getting banned is setting up multiple accounts. . That's just my gut feeling; I don't have access to any statistics or records or anything like that.

I think the second most common reason is for people continuing to post insulting or argumentative comments after they have been warned by a moderator to stop. . I know several former forum members outside of this forum, and they have told me that that is the reason they were banned. . They said that they didn't care if they got banned or not, so they just continued with the rude comments even after a warning, and of course were banned as a result.

That seems like a very odd thing to do, but I guess it speaks to their character.

It's literally like when we are told during a huge HS graduation that they will announce a group of names, then provide time for applause, otherwise folks will be escorted out if they don't comply. So a handful of graduates have jerks for friends and family that make a ruckus as their graduate go up, just to get attention, or whatever, and then are escorted out because they don't care to be there for anyone else, they just wanted to be selfish and disrespectful purposely and they think they are funny.

I am pretty sure the number one reason for permanent bans on almost all forums including this one is for posting SPAM.
We just don't see that much on this board because if three people report it, the post is hidden until the moderators review it. So the first three people willing to report the post and those who see before it is reported for the third time are the only ones who see it.

I report a lot of first-timers' posts in the category "Signature advertisement, link bait," which you might call low-intensity spam. For safety reasons, I never click on such links. Sometimes it isn't clear that the link in a sig goes to the wrong kind of site. Who knows, some photographer's portfolio might have the title "Winbigmoneyfast."

If you report it under spam, pekka has a rule that with enough spam reports, the post is locked down.
