I'm looking for some kind of hard case for 2-4 77mm round filters. (2 being the minimum for a 10 stop ND and a CPL.) I'll be hiking and taking landscape photos so I want something with some durability so that they don't get broken if pressed on by something in my pack. A lower profile would be better too, to save space. Does anyone have any recommendations for me?

How about a soft pouch to hold them and then put the pouch into a pelican case?

I have the tiffen pouch and it is handy, so I would think all I would need is a robust case to put that into.

Lifetime warranty on the pelican too. If you didn't want the tiffen pouch, you can buy pluck foam for the pelican case, and you could create filter pockets within that pluck foam. The foam block adds $6 to the case price. The case is water resistant, so you may be able to fit other things in it too, or go to a different size. The G40 looks interesting to me personally.

If waterproofing isn't necessary, nor a lifetime warranty and such ruggedness, then something like a hard headphone case might work, just keep filters within soft envelopes so they are separated from each other.

Many years ago 3M packaged electrical tape in a round plastic box that measured 3.25 inches on the inside. I have several and they work fine for two and sometimes three 77mm filters somewhat depending on the physical characteristics of the filter; thickness and outside diameter. Unfortunately tape isn’t packaged that way anymore but perhaps you are a pack rat like me and have some around.

I would also suggest you take a trip to a local Michael's or Hobby Lobby craft store and see what they might have. I know my wife has something in the way of a rigid hinged plastic box, probably from Michael’s and it measures 3.5 x 3.5 x 1. I think it is for storeage of beads.

If you have a “The Container Store” location near you also give them a check.

Tip for shopping these craft stores; always ask for help! They are huge but if you give a store employee an idea of what you want, they know best of all the possibilities.

Could try using 3.5" floppy cases, they are still around.

Check the Ruggard offering at B&H ($10). See https://www.bhphotovideo.com …ket_filter_pouch_for.html (external link).

Note that the pouch when open is said to measure 4.5 x 17.5" when opened and then folds to a compact, 4.5 x 4.5".

The version made by Sensei seems to be identical at $7. See https://www.bhphotovideo.com …ilter_pouch_3_pocket.html (external link)

So based on the OP, how hard or rigid must the storage unit be for the filters? I presume hard enough to prevent any kind of flexing force against one side of the filter. Without any continued feedback, all kinds of ideas will be suggested. :(

I have many OEM filter cases which I use in case I need better protection than aftermarket soft cases, in situations similar to OP's.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'm looking for something fairly rigid and protective, but I don't want anything nearly as bulky or heavy as a pelican case. The suggestion that seems best so far is the electrical tape box. I happen to have a box from a roll of Scotch Super 88 in front of me and it has an internal width of 87mm, which isn't too bad. It's 20mm deep so would fit several filters. This would be sufficiently rigid for me and pleasantly light (16 g) and compact, which is good for backpacking. I'd need to make a set of thin foam spacers to keep the filters separated. The issue is that it's a little less than ideal if I wanted to take the bottom filter out of the case. It would be easy to accidentally drop a bunch of filters, especially with cold and numb fingers.

For reference, I'm currently using a 110 x 110 x 35 mm soft folding filter wallet that holds 3 filters. I don't like the lack of protection it provides and I especially dislike how easily the filters slide out. Last year my brother destroyed a 10 stop ND filter when it slid out of the case while he was unfolding it. (It's currently holding a 10 stop ND, 3 stop ND, and CPL.)

Don't the filters come in little plastic boxes? Why not just use what came with the filters?

I happened to be in a Christmas Tree shop this morning and in their container section they had a package of (3) 8 ounze rigid and round plastic containers. I didn't have anything to measure them with but they were about 3-1/4 iches. Each contaiiner was about 1 inch high.

$2 for the set of three.

Have you looked into stacking caps. They protect your filters and add very little to there length.

I also use stack caps. Compact and sturdy.
