I'm taking a break from macro photography to devote some time to still life.

While I've got a DIY light box (PVC pipe and fabric) that works very well for product type photography, I'm interested in exploring more artistic images.

I try to build as much of my equipment as I can, both to minimize expense and because I enjoy building things.

Looking at the commercial style still life tables that you see on Amazon, I've found that building the structure is quite easy. On the other hand, the diffusion material seems a much tougher nut to crack.

As a general rule, they seem to use flexible translucent plastic as the diffusion material and subject stage. I'm at a loss as to what to use, and I haven't found anything appropriate at the local home stores.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

It's expensive but you get a lot of it.

Any idea how heavy of an object it'll support when clamped to a frame? Say something like a handgun, wine bottle or vintage SLR?

Put glass or plexi under it.

I've used 2x4' ceiling light panels too. If you have an industrial plastic place they have a variety of surfaces that work well for small product.

This is a local place I've used for various supplies:

I know I'm late to the party on this one, but ...

I purchased an aluminum table, with a fairly thin acrylic diffuser from BHphotovideo. Acrylic is clamped to the table, and supports a black rifle with optics.

Retired, but still learning ...
