I take some photos of my daughter's track and field team during meets/events. I normally share photos with parents via email and send photos to the coach for their website/end of year slideshow via USB drives. I have been wondering if there is a way to store them online so that the coach can take the photos that he wants and the parents can download photos of their child if they want? Would something like Google Drive work for that?

Thanks

Google Drive should work but you'd have to leave them in your Google Drive or they'd lose access. I share my daughter's soccer pictures on SmugMug so each game get its own gallery, people can download photos if they want, etc. You also have control over visibility and access.

I would think that any of the photo sharing sites would work. Many also offer the ability for visitors to order prints as well. I've used Zenfolio and Flickr and both would do what you are looking to do. Zen is a bit better if you want to earn a bit on the side with print sales, but there are many others out there as well.

I have a Smugmug account. I didn't know that they can download from that.

I don't really care about making any money, I just enjoy the sport and enjoy photography so I get to scratch both itches at the same time!

If you already have it, use your SmugMug site. As long as you are at a level that allows it, downloading from there is very easy for parents.

I have the basic service of SmugMug. I think if I email them the link to that specific album then they can download or print? I have not used it a lot yet so am a bit unfamiliar with all the features.

Do you use the Sharegroup function?

Unless you disable it, there's a download link under each image and a "download all" link at the top of each gallery. You can also make galleries invisible unless someone has the link, password protect galleries, or even make a gallery display with a random URL under smugmug.com instead of duckster.smugmug.com. That's called "hide owner" and is good for situations when you want people to see one gallery or image without being able to see everything else you have hosted.

Thank you!

Can the people viewing the gallery download individual photos from it?

Yes. Under the image, there are icons for sharing, downloading, and seeing detailed information like the file name and exif. This is all configurable by you as the site owner. You can see how others will see your site by opening it in an incognito window so it doesn't see you logged in. Its a little different on mobile but the same functions are available.

I'm thinking of doing the same - using a cloud service to share photos of events.

Is there a way to do this whereby only the subject can download photos of themselves, but not of other people, without a huge amount of work on my part? This would be important because there are often children competing, too.

As I was working with SmugMug today, you can set up Sharegroups that could include photos of each athlete individually. But the galleries are only open to who has the link. Or you can make a password as well.

When I travel with friends and I have to share photos and I can not give them physically on a flash drive, I share them in the cloud creating a folder with a password that I give them so they can be downloaded to your computer. I usually use dropbox or google drive to do it.

So far the Smugmug Sharegroup is working. Will be adding photos from another meet today so will have another test.
