Bought my 7D in Sept 2010. Should I wait on the Mark III, or get the Mark II now?

Thanks for opinions!!

With the R series camera out now, I don't know where Canon are going with their line-up!

I'd go with the 7D ii if you want an update, or perhaps the 80D. I read somewhere (can't remember where but in the last week or two) rumours that the 7D and XXD line-up might be merged......

Get a MarkII now, if you're wanting an upgrade. It's a GREAT step forward from the MkI and there's no point in waiting for an unannounced body to show up; it may or may not happen and could be some time, even if it does.

I would definitely get the 7D2 now, were I in your position.

In fact, even if the 7D3 were released tomorrow, I would still get the 7D2. . Why? . Well, because the 7D2 has been out for so long, you can find ones that have been well used, and save a lot of money over new prices. . If a 7D3 does come out soon, you will need to buy it new, and therefore pay a premium.

Instead of suffering a lot of depreciation, let someone else suffer the depreciation.

Do you think a 7D3 will have some feature that you really want, that the 7D2 doesn't have? . I can't imagine anything actually useful, unless you're into shooting video with your DSLR.

"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

There may not be a 7D III or a 90 D.......I just saw this the other day. Appears both the 7D II and the 80 D are going to be replaced by a single model.

Agree with both of these. I finally upgraded from the original 7d to the 7d2 about a month ago. I am really loving the 7d2. The AF in particular is a huge step forward, the increase in frame rate is noticeable, and the high ISO handling is impressive. I also don't know what else I'd look for in a 7d3 relative to a 7d2, but I'm happy to shoot with this at least until the 7d3 does come out.

I also saw a rumor today that we might see a 7d3 in 2020, but not in 2019, which does contradict the rumors of merging the 90D and 7d3, but if you're going to be waiting that long, I think it's definitely worth getting the 7d2 in the meantime.

I'd get the 7D II now. There have been rumors of a 7D III for a year now. Look at the date on this article...

Worth considering...I bought the 80D over the 7D II because the 80D was $400 less expensive and
has an extra 4mp. I use my 80D for air show photography and its AF performs very well. Those extra pixels
are helpful when cropping images of little aerobatic planes high in the sky.

I'd go with the 7DII now. It is available refurbished from Canon for $1200 and supposedly another 15% off with code FRIEND15. See https://shop.usa.canon.com …-mark-ii-body-refurbished (external link)

I don't own one but from all reports the 7DII is an excellent camera. The III, if and when it gets here will be of course described with all sorts of marketing hype.

Having owned the 7DII for a time, I was not that impressed with the AF on it. When compared to my 1Dx, the AF flat out sucked. Even my 6DII seems to have better/more accurate AF. The problem is that the 7DII just seemed overall slightly slower than what I needed for shooting sports, and in particular, Hockey. I think my decision to sell was when I had an opportunity to shoot during an AHL hockey game at a normal NBA/NHL style venue. Images were often slightly soft and I would get focus on things I didn't want focus on, even with center point focus. or example I would shoot from one blue line to behind the goal and in a couple shots, the boards and crowd would be in focus, then in another shot I would get the players in focus. In taking standard photos it performed well, though I didn't buy the camera for that. I tried different settings and nothing seemed to change. (also tested shooting nephews weekend hockey games as a test with different settings and lenses)

I will say though that it did have a nice FPS and it was unbelievably quiet as compared to my 1Dx.

End of the day I sold the 7DII and bought my 6DII which produces great images. (though now going to evaluate an EOS R)

So you would say the 6d ii is as good for sports as the 7d ii?

My 7D2 was great at sports, hockey, softball, rugby, and basketball, easily in the league of my 1d4. It just took configuring the myriad of AF settings, but once set up, it was great.

Do you think that maybe with the same AF settings (or what seems to be the same, or default), the 7D2 tends to look for a new focus depth faster than the other cameras if it goes off-target for a moment?

That would explain the "twitchiness" that some people speak of.

With the default out of the box, perhaps. Just like the 1d3 where many of us had to slow down the setting of acquisition of a new target, I did the same with the 7d3. I ran a modified case 2 and case 4 with spot AF and focus first priority, I believe.
