All, Im getting a Gimbal Head to pair with my 7dmkii and my Sig 150-600 and in hopes one day to pair with a 500 f4.

I was all set on a CF gimbal, NEST to be exact. I ve used them a bit, and shoot with a few guys that own them. Like them hands down! A great CF gimbal.

Today I was told that CF gimbals do not absorb any shake and therefore IF there is lens shake, say in panning for BIF that the head won't absorb any of that, unlike aluminum. This was the first I have heard of it, Before I pull the trigger, has anyone seen this issue arise?

Cole

To be honest you won't notice hardly any difference in either. Both would probably be the same. The biggest problem you have is your tripod lens foot in the Sigma flexes a lot! I know because I had the same lens. I used it on the Manfrotto 393 and replaced it with the Wimberley gimble. The set up was stiff but noticed it still flexed. Did some investigation and saw that the tripod mount was the reason. I made a support to help stop the movement which worked well. I sold that lens and got the canon 600mmnf4 is no more problems.

https://www.digitalcameraworld.com …-gimbal-heads-for-tripods (external link) Is probably worth a read, if you haven’t seen it already. It is from November 2018. I took note that almost all the equipment shown is aluminum. As others have stated, you probably won’t notice a big difference between the two materials so more importantly look at the pros and cons deemed critical by the writer of the article and then move forward on your choice.

I bought the Induro GHB2 Gimbal head last year. I was set on buying the Wimberley 2. However after taking both for a test drive at my local shop, I preferred the feel of vertical movement as it was the same in the up and down movement compared to the Wimberley. Nothing major difference wise. What I really liked was the calibrated scale on the Induro (Benro). After balancing the camera and lens, taking note where it was on the scale allowed me to set up much faster without balancing again and again. Many Photographers I know with the Wimberley have a bunch of markings written by hand all over. Something minor I guess, but why ruin the nice looks.
Almost all of the Wimberley I have seen along with other brands have been the Aluminum version. As using on a tripod almost exclusively, the additional weight savings my not be that critical.
In hand the weight difference is noticeable.
So far it works and looks good.

Thank you all. I tried out a few, our camera store in our part of Montana is limited. I went with the Nest Carbon Fiber. I liked the scale, the feel of the knobs and the overall build. I may get chance this week to try it on some BIF, but the real test will be in two weeks when I head to South Texas for a week long bird migration photo trip. I'll report back on how it works paired with my Induro CF legs.

Thanks

Cole
