OK. Let's stipulate that it's hard to fix stupidity. Checking out a seldom used 600, I noticed the batteries were dead. Looking closer, I could see one of the ground clips had corroded along with the battery. I know better than to leave a battery for along period of time. OK. Just stupid. Scraping the clip enabled me to limp along using the flash, but the last time I scraped, the clip broke. Anyone know of a place to get the flash fixed? My days of tight place soldering are behind me; folded up aluminum foil is a pain ever time I remove the batteries. Hate to throw away an otherwise OK flash.

Why not toss it and replace it with a Yongnuo or Godox flash? The new cost of one of those 3rd party flashes is probably less than the repair cost of the Canon flash.

Good time to invest in low self discharge NiMH batteries like the Eneloop or similar. They won't leak and ruin your expensive doodads.

I don't use alkaline AA or AAA sizes at all anymore.

Thanks, guys. The Houston shop didn't work out; they didn't have the part. From now on good idea on the batteries. Hadn't had much experience with the Y flash, but worth a shot.

If you decide to scrap it, can I be first in line to get the broken flash?

I need another small flash and don't mind rigging it somehow.

Exactly what has broken? Is it one of the terminal strips well down in the battery compartment, or something on the battery compartment cover?

If it is the cover, that is easily replaceable and it appears to be about $33 (https://uscamera.com …-cover-assembly-cy2-4315/ (external link)). If it is the terminations down inside then live with the unit or scrap it because the battery assembly is about $133 (see https://uscamera.com …y-case-assembly-cy2-4279/ (external link)). $110 on eBay (see https://www.ebay.com …1bb2e7:g:SqsAAOSwQM9UZtB2 (external link)). Also probably a bit complex for the average user to replace (picture below).

New unit on eBay at $259, see https://www.ebay.com …48be55:g:he0AAOSwuptcnn3K (external link)

You can explore other parts for the 600EX at https://uscamera.com …/canon-speedlite/page/10/ (external link) and then explore the next few pages.

I was thinking about this as well. Would like to see a picture of the damage but donor parts might be an option.

Sad to say, the damaged part is the down-in-the-compartment variety, so I guess tinkering is the route i'll take for now. Thanks to all!
Mike
