Camera Won't Turn Off!

I have a Rebel EOS T2i. And I love it. It's been good to me.

Recently the camera won't shut off when switching the power switch. Is this a known problem?

Interestingly enough it will turn off when the battery hatch is opened (even if the battery is still in the camera)

Well that is something new and different! Not sure what might work as seems to be very rare. Can’t find any other mention on the web. I think I would reflash the firmware as a starter. Doing that has fixed many strange issue in the past with several model cameras. Check here https://www.usa.canon.​com …subtab=download​s-firmware for the download and instructions.

On the battery cover, there is a very small switch in the cover that detects the dorr is open and that is intended to shut the camera down. What you are getting, with respect to the door, is proper behavior.

Yeah, resets are always the best first go to trouble shooting steps. I'd probably also try removing the main battery. I suspect the T2i has a watch battery too (newest Canon models no longer have). I'd remove all batteries and let it sit overnight (to be sure it's fully discharged). Then try putting the batteries back. It can help clear a possible error that's keeping the camera on.

Given that it shuts off normally when the battery cover is opened (it is designed to do that) it would seem that the likely problem is a faulty on/off switch.

Try doing the above suggestions (reset/firmware) and also test with/without lens (faulty/dirty connection might cause problem. If none of that helps then probably needs a repair/new switch.

I did a little searching (I've got a T2i, also, and you never know) and came up with a dearth of information regarding your problem. After a couple of pages of searching the only things I had come up with was that the Long Exposure Noise Reduction might cause the problem and a vague mention of sensor cleaning possibly being associated with the problem.

Also, have you ever used Magic Lantern with your T2i?

And, do yall know of a supplier for aftermarket On/Off Switches and the sort for cameras?

Plug your camera into your computer and use Eos utility to do the update.

Clyde29, I would think that for a part like that you would need to go to Canon or either find a junked out camera to rob one from. The bigger problem (for me) would be to figure out how to remove the old one and replace it. Does it have wire leads? Is it surface mounted to a circuit board? How do you get to it? Etc.,...

Does the camera function normally (other than not turning off with the switch) when the battery door is closed? It might be kludgy, but you might fare better using the battery door as an on/off switch rather than trying to open up the camera frame.

Something you *might* try is some electronic switch contact cleaner. Use only a very small amount around the switch lever and work the lever back and forth. Use at your own risk, though I've never had a problem using it on ham radios and other electronics, but I've never used it on a camera.

I'll have to order a card reader since I can't seem to find a copy of the EOS utility that I can easily download. I surely don't still have the CD.

Does this camera have a "second battery" or "memory battery?" I can't seem to find it!

I recommend that you call Canon Customer Support at 1-800-652-2666

Whenever I have called, they answer my call promptly and I don't wait on hold at all, and I get someone who speaks English clearly (as a first language). . I have also found that the staff are very knowledgable and helpful.

They will let you know the easiest way of downloading the latest firmware, and they will also be able to guide you to the location of the "memory battery".

There really isn't any viable reason not to call Canon Customer Support in any such matter.

Update (4-17-19):

I was able to get the firmware updated. It did not fix the issue. Sometimes the camera will shut off when I switch it to off, but it will come back on within 5 seconds. I'm thinking it's just a faulty switch. I'm now using the battery door as the on off switch... It's getting the job done, but isn't ideal.
