Buying an EF 50mm 1.2 in 2019 — last of its kind?

This has probably been asked and conjectured about before, but do you all think the current EF 50mm 1.2 will be the last of its kind for the EF mount? All the new 50mm mirrorless primes (Canon 1.2, Lumix 1.4, Noct 0.95 lol) are bigger and heavier than the 85L. No thanks. The 50 1.2 isn't the sharpest, but it's weather-sealed and relatively lightweight, about half the weight of the RF 50mm 1.2. I've been managing with a 50mm 1.8 for the better part of a decade, but I think I'm finally about really to break down and get the EF 50 1.2.

There will be very few EF lenses fun this point forward. The EF line is very mature and doesn't really need many others at this point. No, there won't be another 50 EF lens, IMO.

If you never tried 50 1.2 L it is worth of trying it. As long as it is not on 5D MKII and you are not keeping it for long time.
50L doesn't work well with 5D MKII AF and lens is two parts. Lens block and front part, which is totally plastic and attached to the lens block via glue.
I have original 50 1.8 now, but still missing 50L.

Update:

I was only considering the 50 1.2 because it's weather sealed. I had no idea the Tamron 45 f/1.8 Di VC existed. I ended up going with the latter. I can't believe how many more great cameras and lenses are available than when I first bought my 5D Mark II. What a time to be alive!

I would not be considering any EF glass as a new purchase. The r mounts are far superior at any place you can compare. I have a 50 1.2. Its a great lens. I love it. But the 50R blows it out of the water.

I am looking forward to canon putting out a mirrorless body comparable to the Sony A7111 and A9- when they do, any glass i purchase will be R mounts. I do think EF lens will drop in price but not as much as everyone is thinking. The adapter is perfect and will allow seamless use of EF lens on the R mount bodies....So people with Good L glass are going to have best of both worlds.

Additionally, canon has indicated future R bodies are going to have IBIS....That will be Huge for current EF prime shooters

so bottom line to me on your thoughts ....If you want a 50 and can wait ...I would wait

If you need a 50L now, find a clean used one. I would not be buying new EF glass unless I had to

It's also at least $1,000 cheaper: reason enough to stay EF.

At this point, I think the 50L/85LII/135L are the last of their kind in terms of rendering and character. Ever since Sigma and their clinically sharp, perfectly corrected Art lenses burst onto the scene a few years ago, now everyone wants lenses that win test chart and brick wall shooting contests, so that's what the brands are doing: sharp, boring, perfect lenses. So yes, last of its kind for sure.

Yet, Canon threw us a bone with the EF-R adapters, and now this legacy glass has "leveled up". No more focus shift, super accurate AF, and someday IBIS... I for one am absolutely thrilled with the way Canon is going about it all.

Be prepared for an intensive period of testing. You may just have a case of money-burn-hole-in-pocket-itis. The 1.8 STM is more than good enough for most situations. 1.2 buys you almost as much frustration as joy.

I still prefer the optical output of low elements count glass (less than 11 elements) for focal length 35mm and above.

Modern glass design is kinda over corrected and looks clinical to me.

Canon : EF 35mm f/1,4L mark 1, EF 50mm f/1,2L, EF85mm f/1,2L, EF 135mm f/2L
Nikon : D lens

To me, the 50mm f/1.2 is a bit on the clinical side, at least compared to the 85mm f/1.2 which does amazing things with colors.

Having said that, I have both and the 50mm is something I will never let go. It just does its job under all conditions, is weather-sealed (as you say) and a lot faster in autofocus than the 85mm (which doesn't say much).

If I did not have them, I would make it a priority to get them if finances, bag space and carrying weight allow. They certainly are lenses that people will look for in the future.

(FWIW, my 50mm f/1.2 has competition my from manual Zeiss f/2.0 macro, which is amazing in a different way)

Just a friendly reminder: 50L is only considered weather sealed if you use a front filter.

You're the first person I've ever heard say that they thought the EF 50L f/1.2 was clinical :-P I'm not knocking your opinion at all, quite the contrary; it's really interesting to me how each of us sees things differently, it's what makes this stuff so fun.

I've always had an eye on the Zeiss 50 f/2 macro, that lens definitely has a look to it that I like. Have any shots you'd be willing to share? :)

I've owned all three versions of Canon's 50mm lenses and the 50L is one of go to lenses. My main projects are food but love shooting portraits with it also.

I would not touch the EF 50mm 1.2 now. The new version is worlds better. I've had two copies of the old version. Exercise in frustration.
