I read Canon is no longer offering support for repairs on version 1 super tele's. I read that Version 1 300 F/2.8's, 500 F/4'w and 600 F/4's are on their own when a problem occurs

Is this true ??

If this is true......I think that BS on Canons part

Yup, been like that for a while now from what I understand. No more parts or support... :(
Preventing me from grabbing a nice 300 2.8 recently...

I have a photographic memory, just wish I'd remember to take the lens cap off more often!

Oh I don't know, is it reasonable to expect them to support 10-20 year old lenses? I own a 500f4 MKI so I'm in whatever boat you're in too! :(

There is a few repair shops that will work on Mk 1 lenses. One of them being MidWest Camera. With that said we have options

MKII lenses were released round 2010, 600 and 400 have already been updated to MKIII, 500 and 300 will be updated next, EF or RF is another story though ;)

There's nothing new about this at all.

Canon has always offered support for roughly 5 to 8 years after they stop making a lens or a camera, at which point they finally stop supporting it. . This has been the case for many many years ..... why are you acting like it's some new policy or something?

About 10 years ago they stopped supporting the old 400mm f2.8 NON IS lens that I had.
Now they've stopped supporting its successor - the 400mm f2.8 IS version 1.
Several years from now they will stop supporting the 400mm f2.8 IS version 2.
Eventually they will stop making the 400mm f2.8 IS version 3, and then 5 to 8 years after they stop manufacturing it they will stop supporting it.

That's how it has always worked, how it currently works, and how it will continue to work. . Nothing surprising. . Nothing different. . Just consistency from Canon so that its customers know what to expect with respect to product lifecycles and service cycles.

"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

This policy is not unique to lenses. Canon does the same with bodies. The time seems random but generally seems to be around 10 years, but this is how it has been for as long as I can remember. BTW, Canon is not alone in this. Other manufacturers do the same.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

if there is a demand there will be repair shops working on these lenses while parts are still available but with old gear it's usually wise to sell at some point while the equipment still has value.

bannedPermanently

I recently had a part fail on a garden shredder. It was five years old and otherwise working great.

Turned out I couldn't get the part because the manufacturer ceases supplying parts as soon as a new model is released!!!!

Miffed? Bloody oath I was. I hate the throwaway culture and chucking 15kg of metal and platstic onto the rubbish dump, for want of a single part and fifteen minutes' work, makes me angry.

I did shop around for a machine shop to make me a replacement but they wanted more than the cost of a new shredder vmad

I don't own the 400 DO II, but I rented it 3 times. Used with the 1.4xIII it has some benefits over the 500 II.

The combo is $1620 less than the 500, and 2lbs lighter. And much smaller, too. It becomes 560mm.

I used the 400 DO II + 1.4xIII for air shows in good light. IQ and AF performance is excellent. On par with my 300 f2.8 II.
Only drawback is shooting at f5.6, if that matters. I have not used the lens in low light, however.

When you see my camera gear you'll think I'm a pro.
When you see my photos you'll know that I'm not.

It also happens with cars, and computers, and bicycles. Oh and televisions. And software. No one will support anything forever.

Some live to be sensationalists. The DSLR is dead, EF lenses are dead, Canon's latest offering is the bomb, Canon is going to put premium features in all subsequent models, gasp Canon stops supporting old lenses and bodies, etc.

One learns quickly who posts new threads to create drama and how to filter for that noise. :)
