Early TIF Raws may be hard to support because they are so proprietary and relied on drivers installed on the OS, but it seems there are better safeguards now. If your photos are a brand that winds up going out of business, there's DNG (a baseline that's Adobe which is the monopoly for graphics). JPEG is also more popular then ever: there's formats for it that support HDR, so legacy support is easy.

Canon 5D mk IV
EF 135mm 2.0L, EF 70-200mm 2.8L IS II, EF 24-70 2.8L II, EF 50mm 1.4, EF 100mm 2.8L Macro, EF 16-35mm 4L IS, Sigma 150-600mm C, 580EX, 600EX-RT, MeFoto Globetrotter tripod, grips, Black Rapid RS-7, CAMS plate and strap system, Lowepro Flipside 500 AW, and a few other things...

bannedPermanently

While image formats may change, if/when a new format takes over, software to convert jpgs will be available.

I have already had to 'convert' my old prints and slides to jpg, and VHS family movies to MPEG.

5D3, 7D2, EF 16-35 f/2.8L, EF 24-70 f/2.8L II, EF 24-105 f/4L, EF 70-200 f/2.8L II, EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L II, EF 1.4x III, Sigma 150mm macro, Lumix LX100 plus a cupboard full of bags, tripods, flashes & stuff.

TIFF and JPEG can't go anywhere. They have no legs or wings and no access to transportation!

I disagree with this sentiment. This was news to me and a very valuable thread.

You have to look at the context of posts over this period of time. The comment was around the sensationalism about DSLRs are now dead with the announcement of the R, EF lenses are gone, etc. That was my comment.

Now on the generality of this thread, Tom made it pretty clear. Canon has always had a sunset program in place for support of lenses and bodies. It has been this way for well over a decade or more. I believe Canon has a page that shows support for which products. Sometimes Canon may still do repairs up to a point on older gear, and if not, other repair shops may.

No different than planned obsolescence across just about any technical product out there, from laptops, to phones, to whatever you want to name.

How about people posting reliable repair shops where these super-teles can be repaired. I'd definitely be interested in UK repairers for one. Perhaps a link to where the shop is, what works were carried out, how much it cost and how reliable the repair was, all useful info for users.
