I’m looking for lights to use with a Sony A73 and 5DM3 for photos and video. I’d like to get at least a key light and a back light for lighting the background or to use as a hair light. I’d also like to be able to wirelessly trigger the lights, be able to control color temperature, have them operate on battery so I can take them on the go, and use them as continuous light for video. Does something like this exist? If not, is there anything that comes close? Thanks for any info.

Broncolor MoveL 1200. Portable, battery, LED for video and modeling. 1200ws of power in strobes.

You’ll need to rob a bank to fund it. Possibly a rental can help if available.

Nikons, Rolleiflexes, Elinchroms, Broncolor Paras, Billinghams

I'm guessing the unrealistic/expensive feature is being able to work with both photos and video?

If I remove that requirement.

1. Are there good quality lights for photography that I can do the following with:
- control color temperature
- change color without attaching gels/filters (this is not as big of a deal if not available)
- can be plugged in or operated via battery for portability? If so, is there a downside to this? Are they generally weaker if using a battery?
- I'd like to spend around $2k, though if that will only get me a single light I could start with that and add the back/hair light later. I will also need a soft box if the light requires some custom one, in case the one I has can not attach to it.

Thanks.

So do you just want continuous lights or do you want flash and continuous? Flash has a colour temperature of approx 5500K but many continuous LED light have variable temperature. Take a look at the Profoto B10 as its modelling light has variable colour temperature but it's not very powerful for video work. As Angmo said above, you would pay a small fortune for what you want.

I'd like something that did both flash and continuous, though since that is apparently not realistic, I am looking for just flash to start with. I will check out the B10. Any other similar models in the same price range I should look at?

Thanks.

How much lighting experience do you have?

While using just one light is entirely possible, 3-4 are often needed even for not too fancy stuff. Main, fill, background, hair or rim light. Just something to keep in mind as you start buying stuff. You will probably want to buy the same brand if/when you add more lights. The Godox brand has become quite popular lately and offers a variety of options. It is also sold in the US under the Flashpoint brand at Adorama.

I've never seen a flash/strobe with variable color temp, and never seen a single unit that works well for flash and continuous.

Talk more about what you actually want to do in both stills and video.

For instance, I do studio-type portraits (might be on location, but will still be "studio" in style) as well as video interviews. But notice that lighting for an interview (whether in a studio or on location) is pretty much the same as lighting for a portrait in studio or on location.

There are continuous LED lights that will handle both situations (but better at video than stills). There are flash units with LED modeling lamps that can handle both situations (but better at stills than video). There are flash units and video LED units that are the same form factor and thus use the same modifiers and lighting techniques.

I went that third way initially--I supplemented the canister-style Bowens-mount flash units with canister-format Bowens-mount high intensity LED lights. Worked fine, although I had two separate sets of lights.

Now there are cannister-style Bowens-mount flash units with LED modeling lights that are powerful enough for video. The usual problem, though, is that their cooling fans are too darned loud for the audio.
