I have the Canon 7D Mark I. I like my camera but the high ISO is a pig. I've always wanted to go full frame and have a chance to get the 5D II. would that be an upgrade or are they pretty much the same. I have 2 good lenses: 35mm f1.4L and the 70-200mm f4L. any good advice would be very much appreciated. I shoot landscape, people and sometimes indoor events.

The 7D is actually a newer camera. The processor of the 7D is marginally a step ahead of what is in the 5D. ISO performance is roughly the same in both but you may get one more stop from the 5D.

But if you shoot moving objects more than landscapes, the 7D has more focusing points (19 vs. 9) and shoots up to 8 frames per second versus 4.

One other thing is the 5D doesn't have built-in flash. Not that the flash is useful other than being a Master when using off-camera flash in optical mode.

Having said that, there are those (myself included) that feel there is something magical about the images from a full-frame sensor. I have the original 5D and used it until late last year when I purchased the 5D IV.

I think, if I was in your position, I would pass on the MkII and wait until you could get a MkIII instead. There is so much in the newer camera it may be worth a look.

Possibly others will have differing opinions on this.

Good luck with your decision.

Gart

I'm not sure what your budget is, but over on the Fred Miranda forum, in the classifieds there, the "going rate" for a 5D3 is $800 to $850. . About a half dozen have sold there for that price over the past three months.

Maybe it's worth taking a look ... but you do need to be registered and logged in to see the Buy & Sell section there:

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/board/10 (external link)

NOTE: Ours is a much, MUCH better forum and a much more engaging community, but for whatever reason, one really can't beat the prices of used gear over at FM.

If portraits and landscape are your main thing then i would highly consider a used 6D. It has better picture quality than the 5D3 , however a 5D3 wins in every other category.
Another option could be a used A7R2, fantastic picture quality and high megapixels great for cropping or bringing out more detail in landscapes. If the sony sounds interesting then i would first jump over to the sony forum to get more real world advice on whether or not its a suitable fit for you

That's a great suggestion. . I have a 6D and am very pleased with the image quality.

These days a 6D body will cost you around $500 to $600. . I think that is a great value!

Skip the 5DII. You start getting really grainy at 6400 ISO and AF on that camera in lower light isn't all that great. A used 6DII can be had for less than a grand and the 5D3is slightly above that. Even now the 5D4 is creeping into the sub $2k territory for used and new ones are coming down in price at a pretty quick pace.

Here in Canada, the 6D still goes for over $1000 and the 5D III are still over $1500

There really is no reason to buy new
Look at buying used

You are absolutely right, but ......... hasn't the OP been talking about buying used all along?

She only mentions cameras that have been discontinued for years. . Nowhere did I see her indicate that she was even considering a new camera. . The only prices we have been talking about are prices for used cameras.

She mentions the 6d is over 1000cad which i find amazingly expensive.

I duckduckgo-ed canada used 6d and saw this...
http://www.photoprice.ca …9/Canon-EOS-6D-price.html (external link)
Which prices the 6d new at 1100cad at Henrys (even though its discontinued).

So either she is looking at the 6d2 used or she is looking at what a new 6d1 would have cost before being discontinued. An original used 6d should be closer to 600 not 1000plus. Im just trying to point out to her a 6d should be very cheap while being a very capable camera.

Or, she is looking at ads for a used 6D that are extremely high - well above current market prices.

There are a lot of those kinds of ads.

I swear, about 70% of all the ads on Craigslist are for way above the current going prices. . Same with the eBay "Buy It Now" prices. . A lot of sellers throw the gear out there with a ridiculously high price, just hoping to catch the rare imbecile that doesn't compare prices before purchasing. . The problem is that some people may see these outrageous ads and actually assume that they are reasonable, going prices.

For used gear, I always go by the prices that people get (not necessarily what they ask for) on Fred Miranda. . For whatever reason, the classified ads at other places are just higher across the boards.

I suggest at least going to either the 6D or 5D3 from the 7D.

Two posts that might interest you....
