Hello hivemind...

Can anyone tell me if they have used the Pelican service www.pelicanfoam.com (external link)? They allow you to design the foam for your case and cut it to spec... It seems to be new because the don't have a huge amount of shapes but they offer good customizations... Thoughts?

I’ve never cared for the foam inserts, they dry out and eventually breakup. The custom cut foam are just a few dollars less than padded dividers and cannot be adapted if you change up your kit.

Yeah, I thought it was a little pricey and it does constrain your kit. I think it might be good for something that you'd never change but... I thought it was an interesting idea... The idea is interesting though...

I would recommend getting some of this stuff

Kaizen Foam is very easy to cut to whatever shape you want and insert into a case. I use it for gun cases as well as camera gear.

Tame the foam with an electric carving knife. I got mine at Goodwill for $3 or so. With a steady hand it makes a nice clean cut.

I don’t know if it cuts Kaizen - is that like a carpet loop surface on it?

Kaizen Foam separates between the layers creating the desired fit and that is what you are seeing in the image. It is polyethylene foam which is closed-cell foam. There is a report at https://www.osti.gov/servlets/purl/1340589 (external link) that seems to indicate that polyethylene doesn't outgass much; "The polytetrafluoroethylene and polyethylene materials outgassed relatively little...".

I wonder of the Trepak system of Pelican fits any of the Apache cases. See https://www.pelican.com/us/en/discover/trekpak/ (external link)
