They are leave the nest within 48 hrs of hatching. At first they feed on the surface, but are diving within another 48 hrs. This is true of many of the diving ducks. Once I notice a tiny duckling by itself, apparently lost. Within a minute several more popped up, then mom - a Ruddy Duck. Ken

I learn much from the pictures and photographers in this forum.
