I though that feature was reserved for the A9 and the A6500. The camera automatically focus and as long as the mode is animal AF it creates a square around the animal's eye The only difference is that the square is white, not green. Half pressing the AF-on or half pressing the shutter button turns it green. It seems to me that the A7R3 certainly have the processing power to perform real time AF. However, It finds the nearest eye unlike the A9 and A6500 which the photographer can choose which eye.

Has anybody else experience this? I know I can not be the only person

This is indeed true.
With the 3.0 firmware upgrade. Sony A7III finds and focuses on animal eyes.
Cats, dogs, birds are just fine.
There is a worrying report of it having failed on a spotted hyena once.

Of course, you have to activate the function in the appropriate menu.

With the A7III, it should not be real time AF, you have to half press the shutter button or AF-On in order to activate it. With the A9, when the camera focuses without you touching any buttons, it will Auto Focus on the animals' eyes (called real time AF). that is exactly what my A7R3 is doing. I can either not press any button and the AF will find the animals' eyes and place a white square on it, OR I can half press the shutter and the AF will again find the animals' eye but the colour of the square is green. As long as the focus is animal and not human it works. Problem is SONY stated that Real time auto focus is only for A9 and A6500.

A73/R3 has real time EyeAF, but not real time subject tracking that the A9 got.

Sony Releases a7R III and a7 III Firmware Updates; Adds Real-Time Eye AF for Animals and Interval Shooting

"Allows you to operate the real-time EYE AF by half-pressing the shutter button or by pressing the AF-ON button"

---- I do not have to touch anything, it will focus and eye focus automatically as long as I point the camera at the subject This feature is only with the A9 and A6500, NOT the A7R3, however, I have that feature.
