How many folks own this camera? Trying to decide if I want to spend $800 bucks to get one and try some action photography. I shoot most everything from a tripod. Having a 5D MkIV my glass will fit just find. $800 will be my limit to spend on a good or better condition camera.

I have a 1D Mark 4, and it serves as my main body that I use for about 70% of all my photography. . I bought it in heavily used condition in 2013, and it has served me very well ever since, seeing continual hard use for all these years and never needing any kind of repair or maintenance at all. . These things just work, period!

I highly recommend getting one if you're interested in action photography, as it is just about the best value for the dollar that you can find these days. . You probably won't even have to spend $800. . I wouldn't be surprised if you could find a nice one in the Fred Miranda classifieds for $600 or $650.

There is virtually no advantage the 1D4 brings to the table over the 5D4 EXCEPT for burst rates (7 vs 10).

You won't get better IQ, better resolution, etc. The 5D4, when cropped to a 1.3 FOV yields a higher resolution file, and the IQ is going to be better. The 5D4 AF is just as good, if not better even, in every condition, other than perhaps BIF. Once you get to low light situations, the 5D4 mops the floor with the 1D4, one of the archilles heels of the 1D4 was low contrast/low light AF locking with certain lenses. One can google or search POTN and FM for a myriad of posts on the subject.

I had a 1D4 for years, loved it, and often thought about getting one again about a year after selling it, but then getting the 5D4 cured me of that desire.

Congrats on the purchase though, I can say that there is only 1 other Canon model in that price range that will compete pretty decently against the 1D4, so it is in a unique position at that price point.

One minor point to your purchase, it seems the 1D4 has reached its end of life, so Canon specific support for this model in the future will not be there, you will have to use 3rd party service centers.

TS, everything you said is true and I knew it. I have never owned two cameras at the same time and wanted to try something new. At 74 my only concern is putting the 70-300 on it and be able to pick it up. Besides I had a extra $800 gathering dust over in the corner. It's due to arrive tomorrow, so I'll let you know if I wasted $800.

Makes sense, and again, there is only really 1 other Canon camera that is within the class of the 1D4 at that price point, so despite its age, it is still a great piece of gear to pick up. It certainly isn't a waste of money because the price has plateaued for a while now and is quite stable at the $800 mark. This means you can shoot it for a few months and sell it for nearly what you paid.

Not exactly what this camera was made for but I did have to try it out as I'm away house and pet sitting. Going to take awhile to get comfortable with the settings and controls but so far so good. Camera is very clean with only a few light scratches. Came with all original material including 3 batteries, box and a RRS L bracket.

Having a 5D MKIV it's still a bit of a learning curve.

I bought one of these used with about 120k on the shutter, not very attractive looking, for about the same price. I do mostly drifting shoots with it and absolutely love it. I can't really find anything I don't like about it, and I imagine when I finally manage to kill the thing, I'll stick with 1D bodies for this type of shoot. It's night and day difference from the 5D Mark III and 7D Mark II I was using previously.

Now why did you have to go and ask him that? . LOL

We all knew that he was just DYING to mention the 7D2, and desperately wanted someone to ask him this very question.

In my opinion the 7D2 isn't close to the 1D4 in terms of ....... well, anything, really. . It's much lower class of camera in every aspect. . And no, I will not engage in any discussion in which I am asked to give details and specifics.

Well it is an obvious answer and since you tried to reply for me, I guess I will provide my retort.

1) 10 fps on both of them
2) 7D2 high ISO is better than the 1D4
3) 7D2 pixel density lends itself to better IQ once it is resized down, or the 1D4 is resized up
4) Dual cards
5) AF is very close
6) 7D2 has better low light acquisition and lock
7) 7D2 has lower/cleaner shadow noise in underexposed areas when shadows are pulled up
8) 7D2 is still being serviced by Canon, 1D4 is past its end of life

So factually speaking, yes the 7D2 is exactly in the same league as the 1D4 (and betters the 1D4 in some areas) technically and cost-wise, and they are often compared. Now whether one is able to actually make the 7D2 work for they want, there are only 3 things that matter there:

- individual skill in processing files, and the raw processor/tools used
- glass must be able to resolve to such a pixel density
- good copy of 7D2 vs bad

Only one of these factors are attributable to the 7D2, the other two are the responsibility of the owner.

That is the completely unbiased and unemotional comparison, but also one driven by personal experience and first hand knowledge. :)

Haha, sorry Tom.

I'm truly curious. End of last year I sold all my gear, I decided I wasn't shooting enough for the amount of money I had tied up in gear. I had a 5D3, 100-400 ii and several other L lenses. Within a couple months I missed having a camera and tried to make do with a FZ1000 bridge camera. That did not fit my needs. The 1DIV was on my radar when I decided I needed a DSLR but trying to stick to my plan of really having a budget kit I purchased a 1Diii and a 70-300 is usm. I'm so far happy with the sacrifices. A rugged, high fps camera with good AF will always have my interest.

Just trying to be better than I was yesterday.
