Bags/ziplocks are a fine substitute as others have mentioned. I bought "permanent" rain gear when it went on sale. These are cheap & do the job.

Other than the price, these bags also have the advantages of being completely see through for easier adjustment & cheap enough that you can just throw them away afterwards.

When using the large ziploc bag, do you cut a hole in the bottom for the lens and then manipulate the camera through the zip opening?

.
I think using a Ziploc bag would be awkward. . Very awkward.

Just a regular plastic bag like the ones Walmart bags your items in for regular size gear, or a kitchen-size trash bag for long (500mm - 800mm) telephotos, would be much better choices than a Ziploc.

The free plastic bag approach is better than dedicated rain protection items, in my opinion, because you don't have to waste any time fitting them onto your gear - you just place it over the gear in a second or two instead of wasting a half minute with straps or velcro strips or whatever. . Even when it is windy, the plastic bags stay on the gear and don't tend to blow away, as one might think they would ..... all you gotta do is use common sense and tuck it around the gear properly - takes a half second. . So there really is no need for anything that mounts to the gear more securely.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I’ve been using the same, 2 Rainsleves that I purchased for my gear 8 years ago, to shoot in the PNW. I don’t see a reason to dispose after a single use; fold ‘em back up and stow ‘em for the next time. ߘ
I just treat them like a rain coat; apply ahead of time if there΢s warning or pull out and apply if the storm hits suddenly. I don’t recommend submerging your gear in a lake, but the upper end gear is *pretty* moisture tolerant as long as you take any measure of caution.

That would be the basic technique, yeah. You’ll want to use some gaffers tape or large rubber band to secure the opening to the lens and keep the bag in place.

Yeah, I didn't really mean to toss them after 1 use, should of been more clear. The nice thing is because of the price you could toss them if wanted/needed.
