I've been pretty inactive in POTN for a few years now....
....and the thread title, for the most part, sums up why.

There's a bit more to it, but what about you?

If you're thinking more about 60p than 1/60s, and learning Premiere Pro while forgetting Lightroom, then tell me why.

Alternatively, if you're shifting more in to still photography, and giving up on video, tell me why.

Regards,
Simon

I take more stills than video. Basically because of the time it takes to render a video. I have taken some video with my 80D but find that although it's very good if I don't need to zoom the zoom is very jerky. I also much prefer looking through a view finder than holding the camera out in front and staring at the screen on the back. A real pain.

If I really want to get better video then I use my Legria HF-G25. I'm more comfortable using it and I believe it gives better results.

The other video I have is a wildlife camera out in the garden to keep tabs on our 2 visiting hedgehogs and a fox. They are really amusing and wonderful to see. As and when I get round to editing that video it will take me forever. Last check there was over 3 gig for about the last 3 weeks.

Stills for me are the major part of my photography though. I use PS Elements 18 fot my editing. I can't warrent the beer tokens for the full PS, I wouldn't use most of it.

Hi there Jonzjob,

Thanks for the comments.

So, am I correct in saying that for you, editing video is something you don't enjoy?

Another reason I'm posting this thread is that I heard Canon sales have gone down 21% since the 5D2 came out, I think it was.

Video-capable more-affordable cameras, plus smart phones, are taking over. Or so it appears.

Thoughts?

A good example of rendering. I have just finished editing a 33 minute video of my eldest grandson's 18th party. It is not telling e that it has 23 hours 54 minutes to run! I am using iMovie 10.1.11

The estimated file size was 4.2 gig. I used the 'custom' size option so as to get the file down so as to go onto DVDs for the family.

When I first started to do video editing it was on a microsaft machine and I used EZDV. That was a simple but very good programme and if you neeeded to change a transition then it just re-rendered that transition and not the whole lot. Now, it seems that you change one frame and it's a complete rend job with any of todays programmes.

If anyone knows of a video programme, freebe, that does the job properly and doesn't take daze then I would be very interested.

edit : - 5 minutes later and the render time has gone to 24h 36 minutes. Any ideas please???:-(:-(

I still shoot more stills than video by a large margin and I tend to use something other than a SLR for video.

THe market expected to fall 21% from last year i think. If you compare todays's market from when the high, the market is less than 1/2 of what it once was.

I do a ton of video these days, about equal or more processing time than stills. A video project can take significant more time to develop, and at the same time, the results I enjoy much more.

Processing video, understanding key frames, probably the biggest hurdle. If you could get a workflow that was easy and fast, more people would enjoy video IMO. Fast, powerful, and easy = Final cut or Lumafusion. Complex and robust = premiere.

Many of the late model cameras seem to be very video centric, I know that the sony's I use offer very nice video features. Along with a gimbal, it can produce amazing quality, and I'm continually working on my video craft.

Hey, Simon!

It's good to see you posting here again! . I missed that bizarre distorted face avatar of yours, which is easily one of the most recognizable on this forum.

It's funny that you started this post about video, because just this morning I realized that what I have been shooting would make for, probably, even better video footage than it does still images. . And for some minutes as I sat watching this pair of Sora Rails dash helter-skelter along this floating log, I considered the possibility of shooting video of it.

But, unfortunately, I don't plan on trying to shoot any video. . Why? . Because I have no idea how to do anything with it once it is shot. . I mean, just downloading it onto my computer is more complicated than downloading still images.

When I shoot stills, I come back home, stick the CF card into my card reader, and - PRESTO - Apple's program "Photos" opens up all by itself and asks me if I want import the photos from the card into Photos. . So all I do is click "IMPORT" and then they all get downloaded into the program. . I never had to set any of that up - it is just how it works from day one when you get a new Apple computer.

Unfortunately, when I have shot video (admittedly, inadvertently when I pressed the video button by mistake), when I come home and put the CF card into my card reader ..... nothing happens. . I mean, nothing. . No program automatically opens up and shows me a preview and asks me if I want to download the video footage. . No little icon pops up on my home screen. . Just ..... nothing.

I'm someone who is really not into having to figure anything out. . Something should "just work" and "just happen" all by itself. . If it doesn't, then I am prone not to ever use it or do it.

And hence, sadly, I will not be shooting any video of this pair of Sora Rails as they dash atop the log that is floating on the beautiful little mountain pond near me. . It is a pity, really.

Somebody really needs to make a computer that just does everything for you with video, the same way Apple computers just do everything for you with still images.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

It can be argued that Apple is the tool of choice for video.

Final Cut has management built in, and an easy editor to learn.

Video is generally more complex that stills, not easy to deal with.

The BIG problem for me with Final Cut is the price and there's no way I can warrent spending 300 beer tokens on a video programme.

yes, it's a little expensive, and it's been worthwhile for me, but I can see the price of entry being too steep. You can use iMovie or equivalent, but lacking keyframes? That would be instant dealbreaker. You can buy an Ipad + Lumafusion as a dedicated video processor, import movie images to the ipad and process movie there. It's 80% as good, and costs only $20 for lumafusion, very good editor. As I get better with editing, I can find the extra 20% features of final cut to be very useful. Premiere has even more, however the overall workflow is a bit clunky, and rendering is slow, so Final cut is a better bread and butter video editor for me. Even though it lacks some features, the fantastic workflow makes up for the deficiencies.

Oh wow!!!!
Thanks to everyone who's commented so far....

....and Tom, thanks for the 'welcome back'.

A bit more of the back story:
Having turned 50 this February, and with our baby girl - literally 1hr 15mins later! - turning one year old, err, how can I put it.......
......."free time don't come easily"!

Thus POTN had to be left to carry on without me. :p

I kept my hand-in in photography via Instagram - which sadly, is (mostly) a hideous cesspit!

....but I'd had a YouTube channel for my paragliding videos (GoPro only) since May 2014, so I thought, "let's see if it's something I could enjoy, while telling Missus S'god that I'll be able to shoot great video of the kids" ;-)a

And I do; enjoy it & shoot great video of the kids!!!

Also, Tom, maybe you'll recall that Missus Skygod (mk3) is an opera Soprano? Well, she and her musician-friends LOVED my photography + editing skills....but didn't love paying for it!

So, having sold about $12,000 (equiv.) of Canon gear 3 years ago in protest, I now shoot with 2x tiny Olympus mft cameras, and had a PC custom made last year, for video editing.

I'm slowly learning Adobe Premiere Pro CC for editing, and I must say, the challenge is doing my brain no-end of good.

No, it's not automatic, nor would I say it's easy....but neither is living in Japan, and being married to an Opera singer :-P:-P:-P

Regards for now,
Simon
