The lens registers itself to the camera, and the camera allows for 20 unique lenses and lens+TC combinations. The teleconverters log themselves too so that the camera knows that you have both a TC and lens, making that an unique entry in your adjustment list.

What the camera doesn't do is log serial numbers. So if you have 2 of the same lens, they will share the same AFMA values. If you have a 100-400 and a 2xIII, you can have 2 values stored, one for the lens, and one for the lens+TC.

The same way the exif data on your images show the lens that was used, the camera uses that data for this AFMA registry in the camera itself.

It depends on the camera. The 5DIV can MFA 40 lenses and uses the serial number to register the lens. Evidently, you can still only register one model of the lens though. Not sure why as MFA displays the S/N so why not use that?

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

While I have not entered different copies of the same lens, I have seen folks say it is not a problem. See page five, upper right:

Edit: page 14 has a little more info.

I'm using actual PDF file page numbers, not the numbers in the layout of the doc

Canon kept tweaking this functionality over time. It seems there are at least 4 different generations of AFMA that has been issued over the years.

I apologize for staying on topic, but being that this is the "Rumors and Predictions" sub-forum, there is something that I have been wondering about with the 90D.

I have some interest in the 90D as a backup or special case usage camera. . But it would be preposterous to pay $1199 for a camera to fill that tiny role. . So I am wondering about what will happen to 90D prices moving forward; specifically, used prices in a year or three.

The 50D was released in October of 2008 with a release price of $1399 (body only). . In March of 2010 - 17 months later - I bought a used one in great condition for $450.

Unfortunately, for some reason I have not figured out, camera prices are not dropping rapidly like that anymore. . I loved that kind of rapid depreciation, as it allowed someone with very limited finances to buy high-end camera gear at poor boy prices, simply by having the patience to wait a little while before making a purchase.

The 90D has been released at $1199. . If it follows the depreciation trajectory of the 50D and other cameras from several years ago, it would be available in the classifieds for $400 by February of 2021.

For my usage, I feel that $400 is about right for what a 90D has to offer. . I feel like I should be able to get one for that amount in a year and a half, based on past history of how camera bodies depreciate. . Yet more recent history is very discouraging and makes me feel like a 90D will never fall to a reasonable price point - although I hope I am wrong about this.

What are your thoughts and predictions on what will happen to 90D prices when they start popping up in the classifieds as used bodies?

I would also be interested in hearing your thoughts on DSLR depreciation in general, and why you think it has changed so much over the past 9 years.

.

during that time of the 50D released to when you bought it there was the 7Dc released as well...that probably is the reason for the depreciation in price...based off the way canon seems to rolling out cameras slowly(3 years now, as opposed to 18months before), and assuming there is no 7DIII...i don't think there will be a better DSLR aps-c from canon for a few years, if at all

Thank you very much Cary!

What are used 7D2s going for.
That's my working pair now, 5D4 and 7D2 and they compliment each other very nicely.

I won't call it just a backup, as there are times when I only use the 7D2, and a lot of times that I am shooting both together with different lenses mounted.

This working pair HAS relegated my 1D4 to "back up" duty only.

About similar here. My working set is 5Ds/R and 7D2, sometimes 2x 7D2. The 1D3 is the backup duty camera. It has a lot of shutter activations, fell with me face-first into a river in Switzerland after I slipped. Then a 70D is mainly available for situations like shows that need video. I still have a 1Ds2, just can't part with it, even if I don't use it much ... mainly astrocam with T-mount adaptor for a medium-size telescope.
