The collar has some years on it and has started to slip and rotate a bit. I'm thinking I could just add a little thin fabric to the inside and tighten up things. Any suggestions on a material to use, or a different plan completely?

I have the 70-300L which I bought an aftermarket collar for but I stopped using or installing the collar as it was marring the paint on the lens. My first choice was to line the collar with a thin felt type material. Easy to install using two sided tape. I never did do it but I think it would work quite well. I never went beyond the this should work stage. Just stopped using the collar.

Might give you some ideas though.

Just preliminary thinking of what I might do in this situation. Get a nice microfiber cloth, I like these if they are the right size:

https://www.amazon.com …_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (external link)

and measure out the circumference and width to cut a strip, join with some scotch tape. Mainly to have a non glue adhesive so it doesn't absorb into the cloth and make it stiff and have a smooth back of the tape. Then use it like a gasket without adhering it to the tripod collar or lens. Regular cloth will start to fray though not sure if microfiber does the same thing? Google says it doesn't but it might shed?

Another option is to do the same thing but without tape, overlap it about a inch or so and sew it together.

If one layer of it isn't thick enough, it could be a longer run or multiples joined on the inside faces with double sided scotch tape and then the last end joined as mentioned above.
