Recently got a t7i and I was playing with the time lapse function. I notice the camera's shutter is complete silent when taking time lapse. Does the t7i has an electronic shutter? Asking out of curiosity, since e shutter is no good under certain light conditions.

Using live view you can either enable or disable silent shooting. With it enabled you are using electronic shutter.

I don't see a menu item to set silent shooting on the t7i. However I see it on my old 5d3. Are you sure it exist?

Well, I thought my SL1 had it ... so I thought the t7i would have it ... but I just checked my SL1 and it doesn't have the silent live view setting, it also uses the physical shutter, not electronic shutter.

You're certain there is zero sound when shooting live view? The shutter alone is much quieter than the mirror and shutter.

Yes, on timelapse mode, there is no sound at all.

When taking a photo on live view mode, the same shutter sounds the same as in non-live view mode.

Your camera has an actual mechanical shutter not an electronic one.

Per Canon:

"Type Vertical-travel, mechanical, focal-plane shutter with all speeds electronically-controlled
Shutter Speeds 1/4000 to 30 sec., bulb (total shutter speed range. Available range varies by shooting mode. X-sync at 1/200 sec"

Yes, but as you know, electronically controlled is not the same as an electronic shutter. Its a mechanical shutter, as they indicate, which is controlled electronically

When using liveview the mirror is already up(which makes a lot of noise) but the shutter is still mechanical (the curtains going up&down) but this is much quieter. The 5D3/4 have also a quiet mode but that means the mirror is moved gentle so it makes less noise(this slows down the fps).
