Hey all,

I realize this comes and goes.

I've had Flickr for 6 years and I have a pro account. However, I don't use Flickr's services for anything other than hosting/posting to various forums. I don't use the "community" at all, because frankly there isn't one relative to the user base.

I'm looking at other platforms for this. I'm not looking for a community where my images are part of some grand scheme. Just looking for a place to host the images, privately even, and simply share them at my discretion via embedding, link, etc. Not looking for a porfolio or a place to blog about it or get comments and stuff. Just literally hosting and posting to forums from it.

I have no problem paying for good service. Flickr has been fine, but the service has been interrupted so many times for me that I'm just moving on. Maybe it's my access point or local connections to the web, but Flickr is just always failing to upload, giving me sad panada messages and is slow.

Anyone out there doing something similar? What do you use?

Very best,

Buying a domain name and basic shared hosting is pretty cheap these days and eliminates any problem of having a third party. You don't have to have a site attached to it.

That said, uploading to POTN has the advantage of metadata embedding, and longevity.

I gave up on Flickr and swapped to the domain hosting option. In part because I do do the blogging thing and have a portfolio.... but also because it means the images are fully under my control.

A warning for those who use Flickr (and I assume smugmug as well)...

If flickr think that your account is primarily made up stolen images, they will not question you about it - they will instead nuke your entire account and give no refund, no reason, nor appeals process and ignore every email even suggesting they had made a mistake. (Ask me how I know)

and more importantly what is it that makes them think an account is primarily made up stolen images?

I have no idea, they don't respond to my emails so I have to resort to public requests.

I am not familiar with Flickr, though of course I know what it is. Are you aware of any other censorship being applied on the site? I ask this question because many sites seem to be applying censorship rules these days that are mysteriously unconnected with the stated purpose of the site.

Is there anything about your content that could be viewed as political or controversial?

To be clear, I am NOT suggesting you should be censored, rather that many people are falling foul of new 'rules of behaviour'.

Send your original question email and the reply to the staff member who replied to your help forum post pointing out that the "answers" don't answer the question.

Ask if it was closed as a result of a DMCA take down notice and if so why you weren't given the statutory right of appeal/reply. State that you are willing to provide a DMCA style affidavit (under penalty of perjury) that the images are your copyright.

Also try contacting sites like Petapixel and Fstoppers with your story.

My site contained nothing obviously controversial, but I was mostly using it in recent months to supply images to the models in private directories and hadn't actually uploaded much public content (While some content would be considered non work safe, it was not publicly viewable and only the person in the actual photos got to see them) and I felt this was a legitimate use of a paid for account.

The only email address I have been communicating with is help@flickr.com, and I may send the person who answered the public thread a flickr mail. BTW, my posting this was just meant to be an FYI on the hazards of working on the assumption that "I am OK because I am not doing anything wrong" rather than a public slagging off of Flickr. I am working on the assumption that my account has been completely nuked and irretrievable, so I have nothing to gain from publicly humiliating Flickr in the hope they will "make everything right" so I am not sure I really want to go down the petapixel/f-stoppers route. What would I get out of it? A complimentary Pro account to a service I no longer trust?
