I am a brand new owner of a very slightly used Canon Powershot S90.

Is it just not possible to capture RAW when the dial is set to AUTO ?

I have read and re-read the manual and can find no reference whatsoever to this limitation and I hope it is just ignorance on my part.

I finally figured out how to set it to capture RAW when on one of the "advanced" modes, shutter, aperture, or manual; however, when I set the dial to Auto, it reverts to capturing jpeg only; it does not even give me a choice to select RAW.

I have Canon DSLR cameras and am familiar with using the "advanced" settings, but would prefer to just leave this little pocket camera on auto and let it take care of itself.

Am I missing something, doing something wrong; or, is it just the nature of the beast to not allow RAW capture when set on Auto ?

Thanks for reading and all help is appreciated.

I have my S95 still, and when I put it into Auto mode and press the Menu button, it only presents options of JPG file size, and RAW is not presented as an option.

I never used Auto, but preferred to use Av or Tv so that I controlled one aspect of the setting (whichever I considered to be more important to a shot) and let the automation set the other parameter, and in that mode I always stored RAW.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions that Auto reverts to jpeg-only; I was hoping it was something that I was doing wrong.

I will just use the advanced settings and forget about the Auto mode as I do like the advantages of RAW.

I have the 'newer' (than S90/95) S110, and it still goes into JPG mode when set to Auto, even though I have RAW selected in non-Auto modes.
