This is a Mountain Boomer. It is NOT a "Collared Lizard". Well, OK that's the official name. But it's such a dull, boring name and the lizard is anything but dull. So I used the colloquial name here in Oklahoma. I think "Mountain Boomer" is so much more appropriate.

While visiting the Wichita Mountains several years ago, an old Choctaw (I think) man told me how "Thunder Boomers" got their name because of the very loud sound they make, booming through the canyons. Later, I turned up an article that said they make no noise at all. Do you know?

Good shot, by the way.

I've heard, and read, similar stories of the name which I presumed to be true. But I have never heard one of them make any sound. They sit very still until you get within about 3 or 4 feet. Then they are FAST as they run away. This is a male. The females are the same color as the rocks and blend in beautifully.

They are very photogenic. Good picture.
We used to see them in Eastern OK, up around Clayton, but that was many years ago.

I only said the name was colorful - as befits the critter - not accurate. And yes they are very fast.
